Have You Ever Been on the Alaska Highway?

The only place I’ve ever been in Alaska is the airport in Anchorage. When we flew home from Okinawa, we flew into Tokyo, and then over the North Pole into Anchorage. It was November and I remember them saying that the temperature was minus 9 degrees Fahrenheit, and it was snowing. We had a two or three hour lay-over there and then flew on into Sacramento, California. I remember that inside the airport, there was this HUGE “stuffed” Polar Bear. It must have been 8 -10 feet tall, standing on its back legs. I wonder if it’s still there. Passing the international dateline, we arrived in California at 10AM, 3 hours BEFORE we left Okinawa at 1PM on the same day. That was an interesting experience. I know of a couple people who have driven on the Alaskan Highway. I wonder if it must be quite void of sights to see. It runs from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Delta Junction, Alaska and then on to Fairbanks, Alaska. The first 613 miles are in British Columbia and then it goes into the Yukon Territory for 577 miles. From that point, it crosses into Alaska and runs another 298 miles to Fairbanks. Actually, the official end of the Alaska Highway ends at Delta Junction, Alaska and unofficially ends in Fairbanks, Alaska according to my research.

My parents did actually drive the Alaskan Highway-it was one of the last things that my Dad could cross off of his life's bucket list. And they drove leaving from Ontario, across the states between here and BC, and then exactly like you lay out, up thru BC, the Yukon Territory and then finally into Alaska. Funny thing, when they did that trip, probably 10 years ago, they didn't have a/c in the hotels and resturants like we are used to, and the a/c stopped working in my Dad's truck in BC on the way to Alaska. By the time that they reached Alaska he stopped at a dealership and had them look at it, and they agreed it was the a/c, but they didn't have the part for it-who stocks a/c parts in Alaska? They had to order it in which when it arrived, was the start of their journey back home again. The highway was thrilling to them, they visited the sign park, where you a sign with your last name on it and put it up, they looked up friends' signs, they saw lots of wild life on the road, moose and so on. They loved every minute of that trip minus the a/c issue with the truck and although they were only gone about 7 weeks, it was a good 7 weeks for them.

@IreneVincent They left here in mid-May and returned sometime in late August, but they had originally planned to stay until October up there, but the issue with the truck put a damper on things. And of course the year that they travelled there it was unusually cool here and unusually hot up there.

@Juliaacv So they were there most of the summer months. And too bad the weather didn't cooperate, since the a/c failed. But, at least they did get to go. Two of my brothers and their families and me and my family took a 5 1/2 week camping trip through 17 states several years ago. We started out in Virginia and took a northern route to South Dakota and then went down though Wyoming to Colorado and came home on a southern route. Our kids were all teens or pre-teens, so it was a wonderful experience for them too.

I'm glad that your father AND your mother got to take that trip. It sounds like a wonderful adventure. Too bad about the a/c. What time of the year was it? Probably summer, to avoid the snowy season, I'm sure. So, it was probably warm weather.

Alaska has some beautiful landscapes from what I've seen in photos and also from documentaries.
