Freelance work and pay!

Are you working for free lately?? Have you been paid for work completed online? How's your online earning coming along? Lately, it seems that some people really have problems paying freelancers. A friend of mine is a freelancer and she had all sorts of issues lately. Example, she was asked to review and edit a 1000 word article the other day. When she discussed payment with the person, they said, "well, how about you get it done first and we'll talk about pay?" Erm... Once the work is done.. are you still going to pay? >.< Another person asked her to write a "small" article of 500 words and was shocked when she talked about her rate... "what you want money for this?"... Erm ya! Seriously, what's up with people lately! Freelancer does not equate to "will work for free!"

A lot of people are like that. They expect to get everything done for free, but what they don't realize is these freelancers have to earn a living.

@Drosophila Me either. I think that's part of how our society is. Everyone thinks to get stuff for free.

@lhgchau right my friend had this issue on the site, freelancer. I don't think they protect freelancer's interest enough

I have had a very good summer of freelancing but I work for a well-established company who pays fairly and on time. But work is not always available.

Actually, I wonder what the root of the word "freelance" is...? Time for a bit of binging, or googling...

there are a couple of websites you can sign up as freelancers to work. but they don't protect you if you dont get paid.. which sucks IMO

@Daljinder right I will pass along to her, I personally hate writing and will do the bare minimum that's required in my normal job

@responsiveme You can join iWriter. Even peopleperhour is fine. You can write or edit articles there. Though I am not sure about freelancer because I joined it but didn't like it enough to use it.

I don't know anything about freelance work, but I wouldn't do a thing unless I received a portion of my pay up front, and the balance on completion.

You really need to be careful about the freelance jobs available. I haven't tried any, but I know there are a couple honest ones out there.

Well luckily I didn't have that problem yet. I have written for iWriter and individual contract base. I still am doing some editing work. I got paid.

Aside from my regular job here in the firm, I'm also a freelancer on Upwork. I do general & legal translation, and law-related projects. I never worked for free on Upwork. I only submit bids on projects with verified payment methods. I follow the same rule in accepting or declining interviews or job offers. I only accept interviews by clients with verified payment methods. I was never scammed. All my completed projects were promptly paid. Next month, I'm celebrating my anniversary on Upwork. I'm one of the Top Rated freelancers for the legal category. As to my earnings on Upwork, it's way higher than what I earn here on the law/audit firm as a senior tax consultant. I always charge competitive rates on Upwork. $15/hour for translations and $25/hour for drafting & review of legal documents. If a client will tell me that discussions about payment will be done after the project, I immediately block such kind of client. It will be a waste of time talking to him/her.

@rina110383 Indeed, well the website "freelance" seems to be the one where they protect the client but not the freelancers, apparently, there has been freelancers not paid, but the site has taken the commission and will not look into it
