Did you ever move a huge thorny plant

Today my husband and I moved a big bougainvillea from the front of the house to the back to hide an area where our trash cans are. I don't know how old the plant is but it was in a very big plastic pot that rooted into the ground. We couldn't figure out why it wouldn't move. We got the bolt cutters out and started cutting away. It was so tall it went into the metal awnings. We kept rolling it over and over around the house and it is now in its spot and when I get the pot off it and plant it I know it is going to do the trick and hide the trash cans. Both of us ended up with bloody arms as there are very big thorns on the plant. We are now blood brother and sister.

Sure can imagine...bougainvilla I heard comes with just planting the stem...you do not have to relocate it entirely... SMH @DaddyEvil...why can't the blondes ask us? Protecting Nancy and Pony is certainly not an easy job..

I wanted to move it to the back of the house to hide the trash cans. The plant was getting so big it was growing into my awnings.

@vandana7 The plant is taller than I am and it was in a big pot and when we moved it the roots went right out of the bottom of the pot and we did cut it as we could not pull it out. Maybe the roots that are left in the ground will grow another plant. The picture and information you sent me are beautiful. I hope my plant grows that big and the community does not know the garbage cans are behind it.

I hope it will survive. I moved a big vase and the plant that was inside had rooted in the ground, unfortunately the plant did not survive. It was a honeysuckle. Now I should move a blackberry bush that is in a big pot, but I cannot know how to touch this thorny plant.

@ramapo17 This afternoon I plan to prune the blackberry bush and then I will try to move it.

@LadyDuck Good for you. I hope you do not get ripped apart. Hopefully I can get my plants in the ground this week. It has been raining here off and on every single day for almost 2 weeks. It is crazy and thunder goes a few times a day and it sounds like the sky is falling in.

This plant had very long thorns on it. We put the pot on its side on the grass and rolled it to the back yard. I didn't get many cuts but my husband was bleeding on both arms. I wanted to put a tarp on the ground and put the plant on its side and pull the tarp. We would have done that but it went so easily the way we did it.

That would take a lot energy to do that ..We have bougainvilleas are planted around the fence away from the house .. They go crazy if not trimmed regularly ..

Good, that is what I want. Lots of flowers blocking the view of the trash cans.

Oh, my! I am positive you know better than to do a job suited for four people when it is just you and your husband, Nancy! Potted plants that large really should have more people moving them.... especially when the plant has become root bound like that.... I'm really hoping neither of you pulled a muscle or strained anything while you were out having fun! Scratching the heck out of yourselves on that thing is bad enough! (I am quite sure the plant was trying to tell you it preferred staying where it was at, but NOOOOO! you have to force it to move, anyway!

Such a beautiful plant that will hide your ugly trash bins! Shame about the thorns but on the bright side hopefully it takes root and will florish!

Me too. We didn't get it planted yet but it is where we want it with a few other plants I bought. Hopefully we will get them planted in the next day or two.

It is very difficult to move a bougainvillea . It will have thorns and is quite magical also.

Yes they're thorny and we planted them at the fence so they'd crawl up and cover the whole fence.

It was but at least it is done now. This week we will dig a big hole and cut the pot off if and will probably get bloody again.
