The difference between friend and acquaintances?

Do you know the difference between the two? I guess for me the line can be crossed over easily. Friends can become acquaintances, and vice versa. But exactly what's the difference between the two is somewhat ill-defined. So ya, anyone know the difference between the two?

Hmmm....that's a good question! I think a friend is someone you can trust to tell your deepest, darkest secrets to, while an acquaintance you probably won't be revealing those spicy details to!

@Drosophila You spill all your deepest, darkest secrets to your myLot friends? How come I wasn't aware of this? lol

I think an acquaintance is someone you know sort of casually, maybe someone who you see quite regularly but not out of choice, e.g. someone you work with and get on okay with, or someone you might chat to outside the school gates. But a friend is someone you go out of your way to see or to talk to deliberately.

@Drosophila There were often people I worked with who I enjoyed seeing in the workplace but I had no wish to seek them out during non-work time (apart from the occasional work's night out.) That's not to say people who began as work acquaintances didn't end up becoming true friends.

To me a friend is someone I talk with frequently who has the same interests etc. An acquaintance is someone I don't really know - but still chat with and discuss things on a limited basis. Not someone who I would tell my deep dark secrets to. Men call everyone friend - that drives me nuts.

@Drosophila You got that right. My husband refers to all his childhood class mates as his 'friends'...

I know what you mean, men seem to have 2 categories, "my friend" and "stranger"

I would consider the people I see at the pool and interact with daily to be acquaintances. We don't do anything together, I don't know anything about where they live, their phone numbers, anything. Friends are people you know and call or text, spend time with, do things together and even know where they live and have visited their home or they yours. MyLot is full of acquaintances who form friendships and do what they can to spend time with each other as much as humanly possible.

A friend is someone you can count on and want to spend time with. An acquaintance is someone you know but your not close enough to call them a friend.
