Close encounters with bison in the Black Hills

Everyone has heard of the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is one of the country’s top tourist destinations with Mount Rushmore, Deadwood and other attractions. With so much land protected by state and federal, the area is a safe haven for animal life and it wasn’t a surprise to see common pronghorns (sort of a deer) but elk and bobcats would steer clear of roads. I never expected to see a wild buffalo in its natural habitat. I have seen bison in zoos and animal park situations but it’s more thrilling to see them in the wild. Driving through Custer State Park, I spied what seemed to be a giant dark statue or boulder just off to the side of the road. It was a massive sleeping buffalo! So huge with all that fur. I was close enough to see the flies buzzing around. I stopped the car to get a good look but didn’t get out. Bison weigh a ton and can be dangerous despite how seemingly docile. Just up the road I encountered another amazing vision: this fellow stared at me when I stopped then resumed scratching himself on a tree. I kid you not. This was my lucky buffalo day. Further up the road a small herd occupied both sides. I joined another car in waiting for an opening. The bison were not scared or perturbed in the least nor was I despite the thought they could slam the car like a brick wall. It was very exciting. I saw some more bison from Custer State Park through Wind Cave National Park but they were off in the distance. At the visitor center, I learned the bison herd had been reintroduced in 1913 to replace those that were wiped out. I can say the buffalo is a magnificent beast even with a cloud of flies around their heads. Photo is from Pixabay.

Here in Texas, I was working for a rancher and he had a couple of Buffalo @JohnRoberts ; so I was close to them every day. But I was extremely careful.

@nanette64 Oh my goodness! I think you would enjoy this Netflix series I'm watching right now, called "Heartland." It's all the things you just described. Or maybe you want to forget those days of hard work?

@IreneVincent Everything you can imagine: feeding all the livestock, working in the hot house, digging a Coy Pond (by shovel only), digging a new stock pond (with a tractor), repairing equipment, helping his wife who was disabled; you name it, I did it. You wouldn't believe all the injuries that I sustained either. One time one of the LongHorn cows hit me in the temple with its horn; blackened my eye. I worked 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. On the 7th day, I worked for a local vet drawing blood from cattle and testing it.

I have also visited Custer State Park, the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands. We had a similar experience with the bison, driving through the area and seeing them up close. Some persons ignore the warnings, but that is not a wise thing to do. Even though the bison seem to be mostly friendly and harmless, they CAN attack when irritated. It was a wonderful trip for us and we went back to SD for another round more recently

You must have traveled the same road as I. No way would I approach a buffalo even if they look like giant stuffed toys.

@JohnRoberts Yes, we were all over South Dakota. We even stayed with some friends in Deadwood and saw all the sites in that town.

@IreneVincent I had been to Deadwood as kid in the dark ages before the casinos. I found the "new" version rather empty and dull.

@AbbyGreenhill I will probably never get back to SD again, so I'm glad that I got to go TWICE. My oldest son's father-in-law is from NORTH Dakota and he wants to go back. He's 83 years old though and probably won't ever get to go. He lives in North Carolina now.

Did you know that the city of Denver owns a buffalo herd? They live in a valley off of I-70 on the way to the mountains. Sometimes they come up by the freeway to graze. That's pretty cool to see them there.

I didn't know that. I used to live in Denver for 2 1/2 years. My daughter was born there. I worked as a long distance telephone operator. That was a LONG time ago.

That's such good news. It hurts to think animals might only exist in cages or zoo's. It's amazing an animal that size can live just eating what grows off the land.
