How has music changed throughout the decades?

I grew up in the 90's and I can say that the music that time are considered perhaps as one of the best music of all time, from the 70's to 90's. Be that as it may, listening to this generation's music makes me wonder where did the artists in those time (where we have magnificent music) have gone? It is obvious that our music nowadays are all mainstream and basically no impact towards the listeners, in a way unlike the music back in the days wherein are deep and you can feel it from your soul.

I forgot who it was, but a wise man once said "Every generation gets the music they deserve." Hence, today's music is awful.

In my country, if you have good looks and have many fans you can have an album even if you're not really a singer. Its just saddening that real talented singers cant showcase their voices because they dont look good enough and have a huge fandom. Also, most of the released music nowadays are "That will do." type.

@JasminCottontail Yeah. The reason why I don't listen most of the time to OPM music is because of this

Precisely :( New generations of "artists" in our country can buy their way to have an album and purchase their own albums so they can label themselves as multi-platinum artists which is really disappointing.

Wen comparing today's music with that in the past it seems to have turned upside down Especially in bollywoof where soothing old melodies have been replaced by hip hop and raps

Music has indeed changed over the decades; however, one thing that has never changed is the notion that "music today sucks." In the 70s, when pop got lame (hello, Barry Manilow) and disco got popular, people were pining about the lack of "good music" like they had in the 50s...the same music that was badmouthed in the 50s. That's one of the reasons there's always a "nostalgia" kick in every decade: in the 70s the movie American Graffiti and the TV series Happy Days sparked the 50s revival. In the 80s the "revival" was for music of the 60s. In the 90s people were enjoying the music of the 70s. Well, just on cue, all the people today are saying exactly what people said back then -- "there's no good music today" -- and finding interest in music 20 years old. The reality is that there has always been HORRIBLE music AND terrific music coexisting. The only difference today is that the mainstream outlets are so tightly controlled that the terrific music has almost no way to seep into the mainstream. That, sad to say, has been true since the late 1970s.

The 90's music was golden for sure... but the current era is not too bad either! We do have soft melodies that stand in par with the 90's music!
