Another Matthew Survivor

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Hurricane Matthew swept ( very slowly ) through the Atlantic region. We were all wondering what to do. Should we evacuate as we were told? Should we stay and ride it out? There was no definitive answer. Who knows what a storm will bring, and who really knows where it will go? Apparently, there were just a little upwards of 300 lives lost to Hurricane Matthew. Most of the lives lost were in Haiti. There were a few here in South Carolina, and I am sure a few in Florida, and maybe even in other states. My heart goes out to all the lost, and their survivors. Matthew was brutal. While there is flooding still going on, and fires were reported, for some reason me and my family were spared. We are safe. For the moment. Life is not guaranteed for anyone. Take a minute, and give thanks for what we have. We may not have it tomorrow.

Sure would be nice if people would evacuate when the governor tells them to. Glad to hear you are safe.

@cindiowens .....I can understand that. A plan should be in place if you live in that area so you can get out and have a place designated to go to.

@celticeagle Some were afraid of the aftermath of leaving, more than the storm itself. Once you leave, it might be quite some time before you are allowed to return. That means cash you will need to stay elsewhere. It also means that while you are away from your home, others feel free to take whatever you may have there as their own.

I think I would have evacuated although I know it's a hard decision- You have to worry about the worst effects and thank God in the US, it wasn't as bad as it could get !

We all think we know what we would do in a situation, until that situation is upon us. It is tough to say the least. You are right, it could have been a lot worse.

I think the biggest shock was how bad NC got it. My niece is in Raleigh and she said it is a mess. I think inland got it much worse than some parts of the cost.

You are correct we cannot the control the natural calamities. But with science there is the provision of prediction of climate change. That can surely help in evacuation.
