Oops, That Didn't Quite Sound Right!

Many of you may know by now that I am a division manager in our city's parks and recreation department. I oversee Aquatics, Athletics and Recreation, and have a lot of college students working under me, including my lifeguards at the pools. It is rare for me to see my staff up at our administrative offices, as I mostly interact with them out in the field. Such is the case with my lifeguards. Well, today, one of my female lifeguards was interviewing for a promotion, and so she came by the administrative office where her interview was scheduled. She was dressed very professionally for the interview, and when I passed her in the hallway, I totally didn't even recognize her, and walked right by her! As I passed, she said "Hi Jeff!" which caused me to turn around, because I was curious that someone knew me whom I didn't recognize. She saw the inquisitive look on my face, and she said, "It's me, Diane, from the pool." Then it clicked, and I recognized who it was. I laughed and said, "Diane, I didn't recognize you with your clothes on" just as my boss walked by! She immediately stopped, turned around, and yelled my name in a very unhappy manner. Both Diane and I turned bright red. I knew I was in for a chastising from my boss right then and there, but quickly smoothed over the situation. "No, you don't understand, she's one of my lifeguards, and I've never seen her in regular clothes before. I've only seen her at the pool in her bathing suit! It's not what you think!" My boss then breathed a huge sigh of relief and chuckled. "Thank God, I thought I was going to have to fire you on the spot!" Have you ever innocently said the wrong thing at the wrong time just as somebody important walked by? I'm still laughing at the way that convo went today at the office!

Yes, thankfully! That would not have been a good way to end a lustrous career if I had gotten fired over an innocent comment! lol

Hahahhaha. At my previous work - we wore smocks so when we saw each out outside out of work - we would be shocked too! I can relate minus the bathing suit. Luckily your boss understood the situation

@infatuatedbby Yes, for sure! Although I'm sure there are people out there who are having heart attacks because the girls' chest and shoulder areas aren't completely wrapped and covered! lol

For the picture above, I had to make the girls put on shorts, since we were taking pictures of them to use in a social media post!

I don't think a statement can get any more wrong than what I said in front of my boss! lol

Good come back. I'm sure I have. I've certainly lived long enough to put my foot in my mouth enough.

@just4him I just wish more people had thicker skin though. So many people get offended so easily these days.

I was having computer problems at work a couple years back, and I was having trouble getting a particular website to load. I asked one of my interns to come help me, a very attractive young college student. I was sitting at my desk, and she leaned over beside me so she could get a better look at the computer. She asked me what the problem was, and in my frustration I blurted out "I can't get it up!" (referring to the website). Just as I said that another female employee walked into my office. All she saw was the girl leaning over me, and me shouting "I can't get it up!" My co-worker still teases me about it to this day!

@annaroselock No way! Both of those really happened! But that is the only two times I've accidentally ever said anything that bad! (that I can remember anyway).

Yes, and probably many of us have. It is easy to have things we think of as being innocent thought of as best left unsaid if we had to do it again.

Some people get really bent out of shape about words, other take it all with a grain of salt. I'm the latter. It takes a lot to offend me. I have thick skin, so I can either laugh off or shrug off any inappropriate words or comments.

No, unfortunately. She was up against some good competition. But she is still working for me in aquatics, and she has been promoted up to head lifeguard position! Not quite as nice as the other job she interviewed for, but at least she was able to move up the ladder a little bit!

That is funny! One of our daughters is the Rec Department manager for a small town in Southern California. She also overseas the lifeguards. I'll have to tell her this story. I think she will think it is funny!

Yes, that's true! And there sure are a lot of people walking around with a foot in their mouth! Wait...if they have their foot in their mouth, they wouldn't be walking around, they more or less would be hopping around! So, there are a lot of people in this country hopping around with their foot in their mouth!

When our middle child was born, many years ago, the nurse had taken our fussy baby to the nursery so we could have a few minutes of quiet. She promised to bring the baby back so she could have a cuddle with her daddy. Things got busy and as my husband prepared to go home...the nurse called out to him....Mr Hunt, you didn't get your cuddle. The outraged expressions on the faces of some hospital visitors.....

Lol! Oh my goodness. Whoops! Someone did that to me once. We met at water aerobics class - and the first time we saw each other in town she said something similar to me.

Do you still do water aerobics these days? We used to have a big class at one of our pools, but we lost our instructor several years ago due to a stroke and we've never been able to find good enough replacement instructor.
