Our Pine Tree

We have a large deciduous conifer by our front fence. It is a tall, lovely tree with lots of pine cones. This kind of pine sheds its needles just like trees shed their leaves in the fall. You can see it in the picture. During the spring it grows soft, green needles and stays green all summer. Then in the autumn it starts turning yellow and sheds its needles. We are used to it but the needles are everywhere until the last one falls. When I first moved here I had never seen such a fir tree and was amazed to discover that it changed with the seasons just like trees did. Have any of you heard of such a pine tree or do you have such a tree in your garden?

That's interesting, I thought all pine trees were evergreen.

No, they aren't. Please read my comment above yours. Larches also shed needles.

I thought all pine trees shed needles. That's why in forests you walk on beds of needles.

But...all of them? I've never seen that.

I believe they lost some of their needles but not all. Our pine looses all of the needles and then grows them back in the spring. @JohnRoberts

German pine trees don't shed needles with the exception of larches.

We used to have some of the trees when we had a house at the country, we sure did a lot of raking.

@RasmaSandra my yard is covered in pine needles as I write this. No, my trees are never bare. They are replenished with new needles as the old are shed.

Do any of them shed all their needles during the autumn @Tampa_girl7

We do. It's of the sequoia family. It grows like mad and is taller now than a two storey (UK) / three storey (USA) house. The family below us who planted it aren't any too happy about the needles which they have to collect and take away.

Oh, yes needles most everywhere. We let the wind and rain take care of most of it but it seems that the needles will never go away @MALUSE Right now our pine is still yellow and still shedding not to mention the pine cones that keep falling on my head.

That is truly amazing! Never knew that. I assume those needles have to be raked or blown away.

Much too much to rake up. Usually the wind and rain takes care of it but for awhile the pine needles wind up inside too. It's amazing they don't seem to bother our cat Sid at all and he doesn't pick them up on his paws.

@RasmaSandra I'm sure they could hurt his little tootsies.

Does your pine tree produce pine nuts? Those things are overpriced on my country.

@CaptAlbertWhisker no, no pine nuts. It has pine cones.

I didn't either until I got a house with such a tree. Perhaps if you look around you might see such pine trees @TheHorse

@RasmaSandra I haven't seen any here. Some of our oak trees shed leaves and others don't. There's lots of "live oak" in our hills.
