Eight down, two to go. #2 in my Favorite "Lie" Songs series, songs with some play on the word "Lie" in the title, is "Miserable Lie" by The Smiths. The Smiths, led by guitarist Johnny Marr and vocalist Morrisseey, formed in Manchester, England, in 1982. They were as famous for Morrissey's witty lyrics as they were for Marr's jangly guitar style. And while they managed just four proper albums in five years, they are considered one of the most influential alternative guitar bands of the 1980's. It's worth noting that, according to Wikipedia, all four of those studio albums reached the Top 5 in the UK. "Miserable Lie" appears on the band's eponymous 1983 debut album, which reached #2 on the UK Albums chart. The record has landed on numerous "best albums" lists over the years, including two separate Rolling Stone lists. "Miserable Lie" was not released as a single, and, frankly, might be overshadowed by popular songs such as "Hand in Glove" and "This Charming Man." Yet it is a strong tune on an album full of them. Not a hit, but definitely an all-time favorite Smiths song. Enjoy!

Oh, look, another Smiths song. Hey, I noticed you've never done a top ten Smiths songs countdown (more than a subtle hint)......

Awesome song. What can we say about The Smiths? Sweet 80s memories.

Recognised the photo, but The Smiths aren't a band I am fond of
