Two days ago I took my mother for a PET Scan to see if they could find out what is wrong with her, why she is having a problem eating. I heard from the doctor this morning about the results of the PET Scan. First of all, she has fluid in her lungs and some mucus substance, and fluid around her heart. Along with that she also has an enlarged heart. It turns out that her heart is enlarged on the right side so much that it is approximately here times larger than it should be. Also, the lymph nodes in her chest are glowing. If anything is glowing in the test it is an indication of cancer. So, Monday I will be taking her to her primary doctor who is going to talk to us about all of the results of all of the tests she has taken lately. I have already been told that she is not a good candidate for surgery of any kind. I am waiting to see just what they can do for her. Wish us luck. I am so sorry for your mother. After a certain age, surgery can be very dangerous, I wish you luck.

@HazySue Aging is not easy, I hope she can still walk even without surgery.

I hate those things, mom underwent a few of those but they couldn't find anything wrong with her .... she was 92 or 93 at the time. Last April she was 98 and suffered a stroke so I have to wonder if that petscan missed something that might have given us a chance to help her before her stroke.

nope that pet scan could not strokes are unpredictable they come out of no where most of the time the blood sticks together throws a clot and causes the stroke the bigger the clot the bigger the stroke. I wish there were more predictable. now scans can show previous damage if there were other unknow or known strokes I just went threw this with my mom

So that's why they couldn't see anything @cyberrat didn't know that, thanks. I hope you get some help with her, it is so hard to take care of our parents and we often forget that we are only human and need a break once in a while.

@rebelann pet scans are great for picking up so many things unfortunately predicting strokes is not one of them. Maybe someday some0one will invent a machine that can do that.

@simone10 I have a feeling that at this point they may tell us that the only thing they can do is to try to keep her comfortable. I appreciate the prayers.
