Coffin Races Tomorrow!

More Halloween Fun here in Manitou! Tomorrow marks the 19th annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races. A bit of history: Emma Crawford was a tuberculosis patient who, like many, moved to Manitou Springs in the early 1900's to take advantage of the healing powers of our local springs'. She loved to hike, especially to the top of nearby Red Mountain (a very cool hike, by the way.) Her dying wish was to be buried atop the mountain, and in 1912, her widowed husband and friend carried her coffin to the top, where they buried her. Later, a heavy rainstorm washed her coffin down the mountain, onto Manitou Avenue, where she slid down the street. Hence, the coffin races. Teams of four, plus an Emma, race coffins roughly a quarter mile up the Avenue, two at a time. Prior to the races, there is a hearse parade, and contests for best coffin and best Emma. It draws a large crowd, Manitou is busting at the seams each year. It can also be dangerous. A few years ago, a coffin wrecked in front of us, badly enough that their Emma had to be taken away in an emergency vehicle. It's a fun, macabre, alcohol-soaked day, and one that, due to the crowds, you must arrive early to secure a good spot. Which is why I'm posting this discussion today rather than tomorrow. We plan on attending, barring illness. Wish us luck on getting a good spot!

what a great fun idea for a race and such a great origin - must be strange to reply to the doctors asking how a patient got hurt with 'she fell out of her coffin'. lol

It's a popular event. Even makes the national news every year.

I hope when they reburied Emma, they did a better job the second go round.

@teamfreak16 It would be an interesting bit of sleuthing to learn where her final resting place is.

No kidding. I honestly have no idea where she's buried now. I've never heard that she's in the cemetery or what. If she were, I'd think her grave would be overrun with visitors, but we never hear of that.

@infatuatedbby - No, I'm at the library now. We're just going to walk up and watch the start. It doesn't begin for about another hour.

Not so much anymore, but you can drink out of, and take as much as you like, any of the seven different springs around town.

This sounds great fun. In Alice Springs, they have the Todd River yacht race where teams 'carry' a yacht of sorts and race along the dry river bed. The race had to be cancelled one year as the river actually had water in it.

I hope you post about it again this year! Has their been a particular coffin in the past that sticks out in your mind? I'm sure everyone decorates them in their own unique way.

And some of them look nothing like actual coffins, resembling bobsleds instead.
