Why do some criminals think it's a good idea to tape their crimes?

Every now and then some criminal gets caught because he had decided to tape a beating, sexual assault or simply speeding with his new car like crazy.
How stupid is that? How can they take such a risk? It's as if they were collecting evidence to be charged.
