What do you think is our biggest problem with education here in the US?

I think it's ridiculous that the schools don't even have enough money to buy supplies for the teachers. All they do is want to prepare them for testing so they can get more money! But it's funny because they never seem to have enough. Teachers aren't allowed to 'teach' anymore! It's sad.

There also not enough money to buy books for the children. It should be better teaching strategies and hands on demonstrations to make them learn in class.

Yes I agree! I think hands on is so great! They get to experience the process which helps maintain the skills.

@bizness I agree and that with hands on you get to see what you are learning in practice.

Since schools are funded by OUR tax dollars I am not surprised but what does surprise me is that our tax money is used to fund sports and music. I'm not against either one but I believe that parents should burden the funds for those things if they want their children in those activities not the tax payer. If they did use our taxes strictly for teaching what children really need to learn than perhaps the teachers would get the funds they need for materials they need to teach.

I agree. I think music, art and sports should be taught yes, but there's needs to be a better way to fund these programs. You need these things to teach children to be creative and sports is good for the physical well being.

Children need to learn about those things they will need in order to survive when they're adults @bizness creative arts or sports isn't necessary to survive but if parents want their children to learn such then it should be their responsibility to fund those classes for their children. Tax dollars need to be allocated in such a way that children can get jobs to support themselves when they become adults, so far I haven't seen a whole lotta people making much money by painting, playing an instrument or playing sports so they should be funded by the parents who want their kids to learn such. Personally I believe it would be in the best interest of all children to learn languages so that when they finally have to go out in the world they will have better tools for communication.

Yes, standardized tests force us to dance according to the music someone else chose. There are many things that children should learn, and that can't be captured by a test. Just think about social skills, knowing your community and taking part on it, developing values, and so on. Tests test abilities, which are fine, but do not make a full person.

@ourlot The thing is this, test are not an accurate account of what our children have, or are learning. It isn't a true testament to their abilities at all.
