Lost Dog - What would you do?

United States
November 16, 2016 1:34am CST
Pulling into the garage, we saw a white poodle dog breed roaming the neighborhood - the dog had no collar and was walking very calming on the sidewalk, not even barking at anyone but the owner was no where to be found. Honestly - we don't know have any/much experience with dogs, so we couldn't take the dog in.. to wait for the owner to possibly show up. There were neighbors who saw the dog too, so I am hoping those with dog experiences helped the dog to it's rightful owner. What would you do?

I have this happen all the time. I just call the Humane Society and they'll come pick the dog up. Then I will usually post a notice in our mailroom at our neighborhood clubhouse, letting people know the dog is safe at the Humane Society.

Do you hold on to the dog then? By the time I call - the dog won't be in the same spot?

@infatuatedbby We have a common area in our neighborhood clubhouse that has a little fenced in area. I usually will put the dogs in that area and let the Humane Society know where to pick the dog up at. Or, sometimes I'll put the dog in the community mailroom, if it is hot outside (the mailroom is an enclosed, air-conditioned room)

Phone a dog warden. I did it when two rottweilers came in through my living room window when I lived in gloucester!!! my landlord was going to work and he shouted that two of those dogs you like are running around outside. so I opened the living room window and they jumped in Luckily they were very friendly but they were massive and I didn't want two dogs I didn't know in the house so I got them to go back out of the window and phoned the dog warden.

@Mike197602 I like the terms for UK - Dog Warren. I am not familiar but next time I will call them... if the dog is small and harmless. But I am afraid of dogs. Very nice of you to have let them in

Rotties are cool. Big eaters though. I saw one dismember a Lhaso Apso once. I deffo didnt intervene apart from phoning the police. Time they got there it was all over. Blood and guts and a severed head everywhere. Not a pretty sight at at all.

I won't even dare go near it because it might bite me . Perhaps , she can find her way back to her owner or somebody with experience on dogs will get it and wait for its owner to look for him .

Yeah - I don't want to get bitten or anything. But looks like dog made it home safely as I do not see any lost or found dog signs.

I would have taken the dog to a veterinary, if the dog has a chip, they can read who is the owner and call him.

I would do what I would want someone to do if they found my animal. Leave the dog in the garage. See if anyone comes in a while. If not take it to the pound.

@infatuatedbby ........ I don't think poodles have enough sense to bite. I agree. Best not to get involved if you don't know what to do.

@celticeagle Yes - dog seemed nice but I have no experience so figured its better for someone else to help. I did not see any lost or found dog signs in the neighborhood so I think the dog found its way home or to its owner.

I never owned a pet dog so I wouldn't know what to do.. and I sure wouldn't want to get bitten either. There were neighbors walking their pets so hopefully one of them helped the dog. Pet owners here don't even pick up after their dogs. There is dog poop infront of the lawn right now but we don't have anything to do with the lawn since its HOA's responsibility.

When I was in NZ, me and my partner were so shocked when a pup just entered and proceeded to the kitchen. I was afraid, but doggie was just hungry, so we fed him, then open the door wide so he can leave After few minutes the owner arrived so ashamed to see his dog eating inside hehehe. For me, I might call the dog and feed him. He might be so hungry.

Check with a local vet to see if the dog has a chip to see who the owner might be. You can also have a picture of the dog and put up signs around the neighborhood and the vet's offices.

I would get the dog inside, inform the proper authority about the lost dog and would keep the dog with me till the authority finds the proper owner.....if they didnot find also I would be more happy to keep him....

Maybe the dog was simply out on its own for a stroll and knew where it was going. There seem to be loads of dogs here which do the same thing. I admit I would have ignored it. Public spirited or what?

We parked the car and looked around - no signs of the owners accept others walking their dogs. The dog was just wagging its tail so I figured it'll be fine. (Hopefully) I wouldn't want to get bitten or anything worse plus I have no experience with dogs - so sorry! AND not quite happy with the neighbors with DOGS. They don't pick up their dog poop! There is dog poop right now on the lawn but luckily HOA deals with that...

@saulgoodman Not quite sure whose dog. But when we do see people walking their dogs - we do look at them to make sure they pick up after their dog! We're on a corner house... As an update - no lost or found dog signs so I think the dog found its way home!

If possible, taking care of the lost dog for a moment or some time is nice. Hopefully the dog owner will look for his/her dog at the same time. If you can not do so, I am afraid you have to let it be and walk away. I ever had such kind of experience. I saw a homeless kitten but my dad didn't allow me to have it. Fortunately I persuaded another lady to adopt this kitten at that time.

Take her to animal shelter. because she won't be able to get taken by unwanted people or those will harm her.

Animal shelter will be quite a drive. But I think she/he found its way home because I did not see any lost or found signs in the neighborhood.

I've taken dogs in and gave them food and water. I notify our local police station, and the dog owner usually locates his dog and claims him that way. The dogs usually get out of their yard or escape from their house. Most have been neighborhood doggies.
