Spelling is No Longer in Curriculum – Is Spelling Essential or Ineffective? I am on a series on learning.I cover writing and not spelling. Is your child learning how to spell. If so how are they teaching the child. I am amazed that they are not teaching spelling in school. Then how do they teach it.English class? I remember spelling that we had a test on this every week. Now they have correction on spelling or words when you type.Like here. How does your child or yourself learn how to spell. Along with writing.Spelling is very important.

I really don't understand education today. Someone seems to think that, because of technology, students no longer need to learn to think for themselves because they can find everything online. But what if something catastrophic happened and all of our technology was lost? People would be so confused and wouldn't know how to live an unplugged life. Spelling sure is important. Words are important. Writing is important. Well, you and I are dinosaurs, I guess. What we think and feel doesn't seem to matter in the whole scheme of things.

That's true. Kids still need to learn basic maths and 'how' to get the right answers. And the number of mistakes you see in signs and notices makes my hair stand on end.

|The education system sucks now. Yes, we learned how to spell words properly in my old days. And I am sure happy about that.

Spelling is still taught a lot over here, but it should be embedded into the curriculum anyway. One problem we have over here is that spell checks are automatically defaulted to American spelling. Another thing that students forget is that if they copy and paste off the internet and it was an American site, the teacher can tell because of the missing u or whatnot. The students can be so stupid!

My friend's little girl is 5 and before she starts school next year she has to know by sight 300 basic words. But this isn't actually spelling either. Another question I'll have to ask someone. :)

@amadeo Sorry. Every child of that age is supposed to know these 'sight-words' by the time they start 'proper' school. But it's to do with learning to read rather than learning to spell.

Spelling is very important when learning writing. It allows one to recognize the elements in a word
