How I spend my Thanksgiving...

United States
November 24, 2016 8:23pm CST
...surrounded by dogs, mostly my own. Don't know what happened. Last summer we took my dogs to my daughter's and they were fine, but today when we went there for Thanksgiving, it started out bad by us running late and then about halfway there, Penny threw up. (as some of you may remember, Penny would almost always throw up in the car until I started taking her with me for "fun" trips. She still doesn't like the car, but she hasn't thrown up in over a year) So we get to my daughter's house and not only Penny, but Ciara stuck with me all the time. Penny was especially bad, she would copy my steps so well, one would think she was on a leash. This picture is one of 5 I have to share, all that have my dogs or one of the other dogs at the house. This first one is of Ciara and Penny, where they spent most of the day today, right by me. For those who observed this, holiday, how was your Thanksgiving?

Happy Thanksgiving!Penny must have had rough time then.If she frequently goes around by car, maybe she doesn't get car sickness.

Maybe she was having a bad day, I have no idea. I'm just glad we made it home without another problem. This photo is of Baby, my daughter's boyfriend's pit bull and she really lives up to her name, she is so sweet. However, she also wouldn't stop sniffing my girls and I even caught Ciara growling at her.

@changjiangzhibin89 She was just being friendly, trying to get to know them, but my girls are getting older and prefer to be left alone. I remember when they were puppies and would bother my neighbor's older dog, he would pin Penny down and yet she kept coming back. lol

Maybe it's cuz they've gotten older. Time is different for them since they age faster than we do. I was home and relaxed all day long, ate a hardy meal that I shared with Ally .... well, she got one egg outta the four that I made. I'm so content now after all that food I ate. Had a nip of rum and now I'm almost ready to hit the sack.

Awww, what a sweet photo @Carmelanirel2 Yes, as dogs age they do become more clingy and hate when their 2legger leaves, I wish I had understood that with my first 2 pups but I wasn't aware of the problems of the aging yet. The aging process affects dogs the same as it does people, although with dogs their aging is swifter so when they reach the age of 8 they will start exhibiting signs of being elderly, some even get dementia but you really have to know your dog to determine if that's what they're doing. I wish I had been more aware when I had my first 4 pups but I worked and didn't have the kind of time to spend with them as I do now. As for getting stuck, I hear ya, it's like our parents as they age, we get stuck with them. I do mean that in a kind manner not a bad one, it's just hard is all.

Wow, almost sounds like what I did, except instead of rum, I had my first mudslide. So, as they get older they will get more clingy? These are beagle/border collies and beagles tend to be needy in the first place, so I guess I am stuck (pun not intended) with them. This has to be my favorite picture of all, Penny threw her foot across my daughter's toy poodle, Menchi. The story is, Menchi, being so small in a houseful of larger dogs, has started growling, which I don't blame her. However, Menchi, Penny, and Ciara more or less grew up together, so as you can see, these dogs didn't mind being so close.

@rebelann Thanks for explaining that, my girls just turned 7 in November, so I should start looking for changes in them. I'm already watching for seizures, because Penny has one back in June, then Ciara had one in August. When we called the vet, they said that if one of them has more seizures in a 3-month period, to give them a call back.

That doesn't sound bad that they were stuck right by your side. Did you want them to play with the dogs at your daughters house or does she not have any? My thanksgiving was quiet with me home cooking all day then spending maybe an hour at my parents house eating together.

@Carmelanirel2 Oh I see I guess its like when adults have friends over and the kids just sit abs listen to everything the parents say instead of going outside and playing.

She has a houseful of dogs. Besides her dog, her boyfriend has 2 (Baby is the one in the picture) and another roommate has a dog. Problem was, I couldn't relax, especially with Penny trying to jump up on me (she weighs 50 pounds) and trying to eat wasn't fun either.

I didn't think of that, that she felt our tension for running late and it upset her. All I know is, I am going to start putting down a trash bag in my car again.

Your dogs might have thought you were going to leave them there and go off without them.

But when they were there last summer, they were not so clingy. Here is Penny with Baby behind her. Baby wouldn't leave her or Ciara alone, maybe Baby was bothering them more today.

@Carmelanirel2 It can be hard to follow their thinking sometimes. I guess you'll all pretty glad to be home again.

@JudyEv Yes it is, and Penny's behavior did not surprise as much as Ciara's. Penny already shows a needy personality, while Ciara is laid back and doesn't care what is going on, yet Ciara was hiding under the table and even growled at Baby. @rebelann said it could be that they are getting older...You know that saying when someone gets old they get grumpier? (Not that I believe that, I have known some super nice elderly people in my life)

@ms1864 I know, I love the videos of the pugs doing the head tilt, so when Penny started doing it, I had to take a picture.

They both weigh 50 pounds and when they started pushing on me and trying to get into my lap, that wasn't so fun.. This last picture wasn't taken at my daughter's, but after we got home and I made a plate of leftovers for supper. It really doesn't show it much, but every time I lifted my fork up and saw Penny, she would do that head tilt, the one you usually see pugs do.

So many dogs get sick when riding. Ours went all the way to New York without any problems a few years back.

I would love it if mine could travel, but since they can't, 30-45 miles is the most I will go.

I spent mine alone if I remember right. I'm always alone. The family went to church. No one asked if I'd like to go. It's an ordeal with oxygen, so I do understand.

Oh, I am so sorry. But they spent Thanksgiving at church? Or is that where they had their Thanksgiving meal? Someone should have at least brought you a plate and visited for a while.

It is tough to travel with pets that don't enjoy car rides. We have one that usually gets sick. Just no fun for us or the dog.

Well at least you were able to spend your day in the company of your family too. I thought at first that for some reason you had to stay at home with your dogs around you.

No, I was around many people, including some strangers (my daughter's boyfriend has a big enough home that he rents outs the extra bedrooms) but we always had dinner close together, enough to be able to have a conversation. That wasn't available, so I felt like it was a "go and eat" holiday, with little communication.
