Nothing New Under the Sun

Let me ask if this quoted article sounds the least bit familiar to people in America: The omission of religion in public schools is cited as a major factor in the increase of crime. ...With the weakening family influence in the vast number of homes, religious instruction ceased entirely. ...With public schools, on which today all training seems to be shunted, forbidden by statute to teach religion, America today is facing inundation by a wave of atheism and degeneracy, and with the coming of barbarism..." Who said this? Jerry Falwell? Pat Robertson? Some far-right wing Tea Party person? No. This is from an article in a Catholic newspaper in 1934. This is excerpted from a June 30, 1934 Catholic newspaper in Wichita, Kansas. It popped up while I was doing historical research in one of my favorite web sites, Newspapers-dot-com. As Ecclesiastes says, "There is nothing new under the sun."

I've seen stuff like this before. It's interesting isn't it? That the same views were held so long ago.

There is credence to the term history repeats itself.
