The Answer to: What's Wrong with Australia

Thanks to all those who commented on my last post. Rather than write the same thing over and over I'll tell you the answer here and add a bit more. In the photo Australia is back to front so the west coast is on the right and the east coast on the left. Only a few people gave the correct answer but there were lots of clever comments. Just for the record, men in Australia sometimes take their wives out for lunch – but they might forget to take them home again. We are going out again tonight to a new Chinese restaurant that has just opened in town. And I am off to writing group this afternoon so I need to get cracking on reading some posts here. I'm taking a 100-word flash fiction story to share with the other members of the writing group, many of whom are new. It's one I did a long time ago but I thought you might like to read it. INTO THE LIGHT Sally was frightened. In the quiet darkness, her heart flailed against her chest like a caged bird desperate to escape. She remembered her mother’s words: ‘Trust me, darling. Just go towards the light. Grandma and Pop will be watching for you. Go towards the light.’ Here it was sombre and silent. Even after all she had been through, Sally was no longer sure that she was ready. She took a deep, painful breath. Suddenly, with a fanfare of trumpets, the curtains swished apart and, looking like a million dollars, Sally sashayed down the catwalk towards the footlights.

First, I'll have to go back and read your other post but yes, I could see the error immediately Next, love the twist at the end of your story! Great work!

@JudyEv I was at a quilting exhibition recently and the quilter - an Australian mind you - had New Zealand to the west of Australia - ouch! She said it was meant to signify her move from NZ to Oz.

I thought something looked off about the shape, but I wasn't able to figure out that it was reversed!

Thanks for the kind words. The Chinese was very nice and pretty full the night we were there. Everyone is trying it out at the moment but whether they go back often enough will be the deciding factor as to whether it is a success or not.

Love the flash fiction. It's difficult to deliver that reversal of expectation in such a short piece but you pulled it off really well.

@JudyEv Ooooh, get you!! Prize winning author. I hope you can detect that behind the thin veil of sarcasm there is a rich vein of admiration and a tiny hint of jealousy

Sorry I missed this last December. I do know of one man who went home once without his wife. I think they're divorced now! (Actually I made the last bit up.)

I absolutely love it- and you have a wonderful talent. I have done many 50 word stories but can't reproduce them here as they are on another site. And it got me tricked- very good!

@JudyEv It happens to me. When many people reply almost at the same time, you receive only 1 notifications for several people. I always scroll down to see, the most recent is put on top of the list, but all the others go to the bottom.

@judyev Good story. I like that I didn't know where it was going and then all made sense. When I first heard of flash fiction I thought It was a risquée literary genre.

@JudyEv I suppose I must have been, even though I'm not a reader of risqué stuff anyway.

I never heard of "flash fiction" but it sounds like fun. I certainly didn't see the end... cute surprise! I might just have to give it a try! And as for your map... I was wrong... I thought that the map was flipped upside down.

It doesn't have to have a twist at the end but I guess it's always a bit more interesting. I'm not sure of the exact limits of what is considered 'flash fiction'. Some competitions might call for 500 words; others as short as 50 words.
