Letting the Perfectionist Part Go

January 3, 2017 11:53pm CST
I've always been a "perfectionist". For as long as I can remember I would be upset with myself because nothing was good enough. Now, I know perfection really is an illusion. It's an unattainable one that will only cause sadness if I keep expecting perfect every single time. I now accept imperfection as a part of life and truly see the beauty around it. The kinks in the world are always the most interesting parts of it. My own imperfections are now liveable. I don't live in anxiety that I can't achieve my own standards. I just live. I breathe. I see the wonderful, imperfect things around me. Sometimes, when that perfectionist part of me really wants out, I remind myself that it's okay to strive for perfection. Greatness will result. How do you deal with inner pressure to achieve perfection?

The think to be perfect make me not confident to show myself in front of many people

My husband is a perfectionist and I tell him all the time that "well done is better than perfectly done". We have to accept small defaults.

It's great that your husband has you to support him through his struggles. It really is a boost of confidence when someone else reassures me that my best is enough, so I can assume it helps him too!

My dad is perfectionist. he made my childhood really stressful because of his unrealistic standards,. I do love my parents but I can't live on the same house with them because they were such perfectionist.

I am not a perfectionist, but one of my employees at work (my assistant manager) is. She will spend 6 hours on a task to make it perfect, when I would be satisfied with her results after 20 minutes. I have to keep reminding her that 80% is good enough, and that she doesn't always have to strive for 100%. As much as I would love to see something be 100% perfect, you have to factor in the cost of the effort to get to that point. Sometimes, it's more cost-effective to achieve 80%, and just be satisfied with that result.

I've never been too concerned with perfectionism which is a good thing as I'm not all the crash hot at anything. :)

I have the same problem, especially with assignments. Once I know the topic of an assignment, I would go straight to the library to borrow all the books required, then I get on with my paper. And since I want it to be perfect I keep changing it until I am happy with it, which I don't... And then, when I run out of time, I think to myself 'What the heck' and then I hand it in... Still not happy with the result but I have to hand it in.. I am always the first to start something and always the last to hand it in just because of the perfection.

I was the exact same way! It got so bad that I would dread assignments and I hated to learn. Because learning is so important, I calmed down and now I finally enjoy aquiring information again.

I'm glad you accept it more, and I hope it has made you happier. Sometimes trying your best with something is good enough.

Your question at the end shows that you think exaggerated perfectionism is a common phenomenon. It isn't. I've never suffered from it.

I'm a perfectionist in certain areas. That's who I am and don't mind.

For the most part I'm not a perfectionist. Then one day I realized that there are some things I like just so. Where I am a perfectionist, or try to be is in my writing. I hate typos and do my best in whatever kind of writing I'm doing to be sure I've spelled the words correctly. If I don't know how to spell it, I look it up online. Sometimes I'll just give up on the spelling and put a question mark in parenthesis after the word and continue - blog writing only for that. When I'm working on a novel, I'm very picky and do my best to make certain grammar and punctuation is correct as well as my spelling.
