Preschool update: My 2 1/2-year-old non-talker

I think I enjoy my #3 job even more than my #1 and #2 jobs. I basically get paid to play with some delightful 2 1/2- through 5-year-olds at my friend's preschool.
In a previous post, I mentioned a 2 1/2-year-old I recently met there who has expressive aphasia. Although his comprehension is fine, he won't talk. When he needs something, he gestures and grunts. He also knows the sign for "more."
Of course, he made me curious, and I wanted to work with him as much as possible. As it turns out, he and I have become quite attached in only a few weeks. Being a man in a primarily female environment may give me an edge with him.
Today, we made a wall out of magnet tiles, read some books together, did some puzzles, banged on my "kid guitar" together, and played outside. When I was taking pretend sips of pretend tea someone had made with sand, he did the same.
He is far from autistic: his eye contact is good, he infers others' intent, he is very social, and he expresses distress when someone invades his space or when a favorite teacher has to leave the classroom.
Today, with me, he was nodding "yes" and "no" clearly and appropriately, and also uttering some phrases that sounded like attempts to speak. I think I've heard him say "firetruck" (in reference to the firetrucks on his boots) and I also think he tried to say "It's over there," in reference to something he wanted. He may have also tried to say my name today, and let me know with clear gestures (one to his butt and the other toward the bathroom) when he wanted me to change his poopy diaper
Needless to say, I'll be providing updates about this young fella. He's made my life more interesting.

Aw Pony...you are so great with little kids I feel touched and in a way I envy you...that is the kind of set I would like to be with 24/7...life would be such a party! lol. Hope he does manage to come out of his shell...by the way I noticed "Being a man in a primarily female environment ..." I wonder if @DaddyEvil noticed that...

@infatuatedbby We're "in the zone" right now. So I'm his favorite adult playmate, favorite diaper changer, and favorite "conversationalist." I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he's going to be using expressive language within two months.

Intriguing. I wonder if some intense work can bring out some language from this little person. I hope so.

@TheHorse ......It may take some time but helping him to experience new words and how to use them in a sentence may be just what he needs.

I'm giving him some extra attention, and I hope I don't slight any other littlies. But all I'm doing right now is talking to him as if he were speaking to me using English words. If I ask him "open ended" questions, like "Which color magnet tile square would you like next?" he'll answer with a point, and I'll say, "Oh, the green one?" He'll nod his head, and we'll go from there. I think he's going to use spoken language when he's ready, and I think it will be soon.

@celticeagle Exactly. I think the best way to stimulate language development in children is simply to have conversations with them.

The progress of our establishing a friendship has been remarkably fast. He lights up when he sees me and grabs my hand to take me over to what he's doing. He's started saying things that aren't grunts. I wonder if he'll be what I call a "cloud talker," which is one who says things that nobody understands which suddenly turn into complete sentences.

He certainly sounds like a very intelligent little child. Awesome. I think you will make lots of headway with him. He will begin to talk more and more as time goes on. Sometimes a child just needs to feel comfortable with someone they can trust in order to open up.

One diaper at a time, it sounds like, pony! (grinning at you!) (You won't hold it against me if I decline to shake your hand, right? still grinning!)
It does sound like he is beginning to respond to you paying attention to him... I wonder how much attention he receives from his dad? If any at all... *SMH!*
You might be useful for something, after all, pony! (teasing you!)

Three jobs? I thought I had it rough with two, but my two are almost full-time, maybe yours are a bit less than that? It's great that you're able to help out at the school in this way. Maybe you'll be instrumental in helping this young man begin talking.

Sounds like you are getting through to him. I bet he will be talking before you know it. Kids do things on their own time.
