Don't You Want Me?

Way back in 2004 our then-Congressman, Anne Northup, procured funding for a new Veterans Administration hospital to serve the disabled veterans of Kentucky and southern Indiana. In true government fashion the ball didn't get rolling until a couple of years ago, when the VA purchased some land for the location of the new hospital.
Then all of the people who said "thank you for your service" suddenly yelled "NIMBY" (Not In My Back Yard). The residents in the area where the proposed new hospital would be have cited every excuse from increased crime (yeah, I have a 20% disability rating for kleptomania
) to traffic to decreasing the property value (precisely why I joined: to make sure someone who wouldn't even own property without the defense of this country would have his property value plummet from $2.1 million to $2.099 million).
There are three places in the region that have offered free land (including Radcliff, which is close to Fort Knox; and Charlestown, Indiana, where the old ammo plant used to be). Our current Congressman (who has a very pro-veteran staff here...trust me, I've used them) said it would cost a lot of money to change locations.
But frankly, I don't want to be in an area that doesn't want my presence there. I hope the free land in Radcliff or Charlestown is accepted and the VA sells that precious land back to the snooty neighbors.
It's nice to be wanted. Wish we were.
Here's that old Human League classic that gave me the title:

Yep. "I support the troops. Until they come home and need help." Sad.
