"La La Land' (2016): Movie Review (Grade: +B)

A great homage to the city of Los Angeles. "La La Land" is the kind of film that much or little, can please everyone (and I say this with propriety, because I don't like to watch musical films... but, after all the awards of the Golden Globes, I decided to watch it). The reason for that hit is because the film is very well taken care of in pratically every sector. Damien Chazelle ("Whiplash") is the mind behind this project, because he is the writer and also the director (which according to him, lasted 6 years to see the light of day). He achieves a very expressive success (I think he is just an "ok" director/writter)... But not a complete success, as the critics are talking. The film is well written and creative (most of the time but has its flaws), well done too (production is one of the strengths). However, it is a little boring as far as being a musical is concerned. The film doesn't have what it so much tries to sell, which are the songs (I didn't bother so much, but music fans will be sorely missed). The cast, overall is very good (with obvious highlights for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone which worked very well together on the big screen), but it's not a asterpiece (to be fair, some acts are quite irritating). The special effects are very interesting and the soundtrack - even a little limited - it's great! I don't think the film should get all the awards it has won so far. In my opinion, they are overreacting (which is very annoying). "La La Land" it's a tricky movie, because if you don't like movies, you probably won't like it that much (but it deserves to be watched in the cinema anyway). The film literally takes you by the hand, and takes you to stroll through the city of Los Angeles and all the beauty that the world of films/cinema can provide.

I tried to watch it but really couldn't get into it. It wasn't a movie for me.

I never gave it much thought until the Golden Globes. Still think I will wait for it on DVD.

I totally enjoyed the trailer. I think you were a bit hard on the movie, but that's based on the fact you don't normally like this kind of film. Given the opportunity, I would see this film.
