When tradition makes no sense

It is not religion. That is taboo territory. It is a sports tradition, which has people's sentiments entangled. Such sports were once encouraged by rulers for entertainment. But now we are more humane folks. If we expect water to reach our doorsteps, and electricity to light our homes, we should be prepared to leave something that don't make sense. Especially, if we have alternative entertainment means. Jallikattu seems so wrong...the animal suffers to fulfill human need to prove strength. I am with PETA and supreme court of India on this. Sorry guys...we already know we are superior to that animal, why do we need to be stupid trying to overpower it, especially after getting the animal drunk! WEIRD. For those who do not know Jallikattu...they make a bull run and people (men) try to overpower it...as if it is a sign of their masculinity...shame.

I never heard about this "sport". It is too dangerous for me. Last time I met a herd of charging bulls, I had to cross a river with my clothes to escape.

@vandana7 I was walking near a river. I saw what I was thinking to be a herd of cows in a field, but when they started to run in my direction I realized that they were bulls. I entered in the water up to my middle. They put a foot in the water and they watched me. After a few minutes, as they were not leaving, I decided to swim to cross the river, and I had to dry the content of my wallet on the other side. Fortunately it was in July and the weather was very hot.

@topffer .. Which means you did not get a chance to show them how you would be without clothes? Hmmm may be that is why they left you alone...wearing clothes has its advantages @DaddyEvil, @TheHorse...just in case you all did not realize it..

Humans are really quite inventive when it comes to inflicting cruelty on other creatures, humans included. Alas.

That still goes on here in another way but its still carried on too. They are stopping a lot of those events now where they can. I have stopped visiting the Villages where they have these Fiestas with that kind of thing they do to the animals involved. Here the Bulls are without water for long hours and it does get very very hot here starting from Spring onwards. There is an event where the Men jump over the Bulls they do not chase them and they do acrobatic jumps over the animal itself I see that as being more fair one against one kind of thing. However I hope that they keep the Bulls well fed and watered. We have some near to us on Farms its wonderful to see them being wild and free.

@vandana7 That is why I canĀ“t go to see them suffer. I saw one poor Bull heaving and gasping for water but they kept him in the Square. Bulls are very sensitive animals and they scare easily although it might not seem that way. The men who jump over the Bulls treat them with respect. Sadly its a Sport and skill not much taken to here. You have to be very agile to be able to avoid a Bull going for you. Its a fair one against one but they never hit the Bull or treat him badly.

Aw...bulls without water...that is cruel...in hot climate..but we have alternate methods to enjoy ourselves and prove our skills. Why use the animals...

Angels? I thought the 'Running of the bulls' had been outlawed? Or do you mean 'bullfights'? (I am slightly confused.) I don't think humans should use any animals as toys/playthings/antagonists in games or whatever. It is bad enough that we use many of them as food animals. (Yes, I eat meat.) There is a difference in teasing a poor animal and in humanely killing it for supper. At least in my own opinion.

I think men, male part of homosapian's is the stupidest species on this planet. This kind of stuff irks me and you know a women would never think of some dumb crap like this for entertainment or to show how tough they are.

When we have alternate methods to test our strength, when we have alternate and scientific and humane methods to test the quality of bull, why are we sticking with such unproven unscientific rituals that too with no religious basis.

Uhm.... ALL men? Or some men? Or only the ones who do something like that? I am not the smartest of people, but I don't/won't hurt animals unless they attack me or someone I am responsible for. Yes, I do believe there is a difference in how an animal is killed, and why it is killed. (I DO eat meat, but it is from humanely killed animals, not animals killed for 'sport'.)

@crossbones27 I wouldn't go that far by presuming that "women would never think of some dumb crap like this" In my opinion, women can far surpass men in viciousness as well as stupidity. But that's beside the point. A particular gender has nothing to do with the cruelty and evilness residing in them. Or even stupidity.

The bull is conditioned to take part in the sport something I am sure the bull hates. But no. Every single Tamilian thinks the bull is enjoying it. Surprising that this has been going on for centuries. Hope no ordinance is passed. keeping my fingers crossed.

I hate those cockfights as well...you know they tie blades at the foot of the cocks...and they make them fight and a lot of betting goes on...the attacks with those blades must hurt. And since both cocks get hurt, both die...at the end of the day, even if they win. Rotten stuff ...inhuman stuff.

I know...but sometimes people do not realize the origin of the sports. I will try to locate that link and offer my views ...suggesting it was possibly alright in ancient days when means of entertainment and sports were limited. Not now. That would convince at least some if not all.
