Is being an open book a good thing?

Feeling a little philosophical today. Some say being an open book is a good thing because it shows that you're being true to yourself and others, and that you have nothing to hide. No secrets. Others say it's not, because at some point you can either offend people by your straightforward reaction, or even risk airing your dirty laundry to others, if you're the chatty type. Wow. Aren't we humans complex creatures. So, being an open book - good or bad? Your thoughts?

I am very careful not to 'air my dirty linen' but I like to think I am open in other respects. I am always careful not to offend people.

That is good to know I think it is possible to be balanced. Being too secretive isn't very good either.

3 things you have to keep private- love life, income and your next move.

I think that's a great advice! Especially the last one. Many people tend to get overexcited about sharing their plans and all that to others when those plans are actually best kept to ourselves.

@cahaya1983 With social media nowadays, these three are hard to keep private. lol

It's neither. a very subjective question and the answer will depend only on how people perceive life to be. But I always believe that we shouldn't tell everything. WE should keep something for ourself.

Good point. It's good to know how to strike a balance between being open and secretive. Plus I also think it matters who we communicate with, since we don't necessarily put the same level of trust in everyone.

It´s good to be an open book. It´s twice as good to be coherent and truthfull, so that others don´t get offended by one´s words

True, except that when we can't hide your emotions very well there's always that possibility of offending others. It's a tricky thing.

No matter how we are or we feel there always will be someone who criticizes, so be yourself and do not care about the others.

It's impossible to please everybody, that's true. I read an article written by a psychologist and he gave an awesome advice - be yourself, but make sure that's the "best you" you can be.

its depends as to the type of book one likes to read. if it interests you, you will want to read more into it, if it doesnt interest you, then meh, not so much. next book !

Haha, interesting way to look at it. That is true - an open book doesn't necessarily guarantee a great story.

I have to agree with the point that if you are open then you have no secrets to hide.

@cahaya1983 Oh yeah you do not need to have everything open, that is not what I meant. But if your situation is open then maybe you can get help from friends when you need it if they know. I know this lady that never tells anyone anything, so everyone thought she was rich and healthy. Then when her health got worse and she lost her job which lead to losing her car and her home people started talking again. She was called lazy and a squanderer when she really had cancer.

Its not good to be an open book .We should reveal everything about us to everyone. There are people who take advantage of it. If someone is very close to us and if they are trustworthy , only we should share our secrets.. Being an open book will do more harm than good to you. Some people keep our secrets to themselves only, but others spread it widely . So we must be able to recognize people , who can be completely trusted and whom we can't trust easily..

In a way, I am an open book or transparent is the right term . They know me when I am angry or annoyed because I will be snobbing them. But as to my personal life , I keep them private except from my closest friends .

I am an open book about a lot of things but I try to limit what I post to Facebook as far as personal problems go. But sometimes we just need to vent.

I agree. I've "unfollow"ed several of my contacts on FB simply because their posts are too personal (and totally unnecessary in my opinion).
