I did not do a follow up about my student and swimming on Friday. I originally posted here on Thursday night. http://www.mylot.com/post/3023603/swimmingly Sometimes there are two of our students and two honor society students who go. Our other student from the structured classroom is only attending half day school right now. The students in the honor society group that sometimes go were involved in an educational project. So just the one student, plus the teacher and the two paras went. I went because I was assigned to A at that time, the other para would have been with the other student. The teacher went to help structure the time. So, we had fun. A was given some instruction on swimming skills, and got lots of exercise. We worked on helping her dress herself, and also on grooming. All of these skills are lacking in her life. My image is of a tea party, because A is also the student who hosted a tea party earlier this year to practice her social skills. We sneak learning in any way we can.

That's a great way to teach a young person some skills. It must be very satisfying when it all goes well but perhaps a headache at other times.

She can be very difficult at times. I am sure her personality and attitude tends to make her mom want to give up.

It's wonderful when you can make learning fun. I was involved in Special Olympics for years and you would be amazed at how they can learn when they are having fun.

Actually, I guess we should never be surprised when people learn something new on the way to doing something else. Good for you volunteering.

@GardenGerty I loved it. Besides I taught a lot of students that were involved in it.

Not all learning is in a classroom, that is for sure. The other thing that some people forget is that learning happens constantly, given half a chance.

@GardenGerty anything can be learning, as long as the adult has an idea of what to mention, how to direct, etc
