A foretaste of the new Luc Besson sci-fi movie : Valerian and the city of a thousand planets

A first presentation of this movie that will be released worldwide next July 21st was made at the San Diego Comic Con 2016 by Luc Besson himself and two stars of the movie, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. Rihanna has also a role. Another presentation has been made this morning at the Angoulême 2017 comics festival by the wife of Luc Besson who is also the producer, Virginie Besson-Silla, accompanied by the production designer, the story boarder and the costume designer, in the presence of the two authors of the comic book that inspired the movie, Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières. Both are 78 years old and are still working on the Valerian and Laureline comic series, which has been translated in many languages, including Chinese. They sold the rights of adaptation to Luc Besson 10 years ago. Yesterday I could not enter in the auditorium where Christin and Mézières were giving a conference and I had to watch it on a screen in another room. Today I managed to get an invite for the presentation of the movie at the theater. As the invite was saying "Anywhere in the room", I chose the first row. It was not the best placement to watch the screen, but a good one to listen to the conference. The movie had a budget of 200 millions Euros, a bit more than Star Wars 7, and employed a crew of 1200 people in France. The film sets were built in Saint-Denis near Paris, and were occupying 30000 square meters. The 3D part was mainly done in New-Zealand, and it has been shot in English. Besson has always given a great attention to details in his movies, and this movie is incredible : there are more than 8000 different aliens living on Alpha, and even the smallest button has been designed separately. I have been really impressed by what I saw. I recommend you to watch the trailer to make your own idea, but, wait, the movie will be released in real 3D, relegating Star Wars at the rank of an amateur movie. Pictures are mine : top left : Pierre Christin, Jean-Claude Mézières and Virginie Besson-Silla at the conference this morning. top right : a costume of an alien. bottom left : a model of a spacecraft used in the movie. bottom right : a view of the Valerian exhibition at the festival.

I am sure that the movie will be great, but I am not going to watch it for several reasons. First, I cannot stand Cara Delavigne, second this is not the kind of movie I like. I liked the old movies of Luc Bessons I have not liked Lucy.

I also prefer his old movies, but I enjoyed his science fiction movie, The Fifth Element. Apparently Pierre Christin had also a doubt about Cara Delevingne when he learned the name of the actor chosen to play Laureline. He said that he was seeing her as a model, but that he changed his mind when he saw Besson shooting a scene where she was in the mud, and he thinks now that the casting is good. Watch the trailer if you have not, she does a perfect Laureline.

@topffer I have liked the Fifth Element, our friend in Monte-Carlo brought the DVD and convinced me to watch the movie. I have looked at the trailer, the fact is that I do not like at all this woman.

I generally like Luc Besson's films going back to Subway and La Femme Nikita but did not like Lucy.

I think I prefer also his old movies like Subway and Léon. His first science-fiction movie, The Fifth Element, was also very good.

@topffer Leon was titled The Professional in the US. That was a good one. I did like his recent comedy The Family with Robert DeNiro.

Not sure I have seen any of his Films at all. Although I probably have but because of the Spanish changing the Title of the Film at the start of it would make me think of the Spanish Title and not the English one. I will look out for it though. So far you are the only one who has mentioned th Film as its not mentioned on Spanish Reviews just yet.

I cannot help you with the Spanish titles, but I am quite sure that you have seen several of his movies on the TV. This one will be released only next July, and I am not even sure than the film editing is finished. It was just a conference with pictures and clips. I had never seen his wife before, she speaks very well ; the authors of this comic series are 78 years old, but they have still a lot of humor and are very interesting. Maybe have you read one of their books ? They have been translated in Spanish as well as in English.

It is the largest budget ever invested for a movie in France. I have been impressed, quite stunned by what I saw today, and it was not in 3D like it will be in movie theaters next July. I think the 3D effects are way better than in Star Wars, you should not miss it.
