My dog is obsessed with chocolate.

My dachshund is obsessed with sweets, especially chocolate. I am aware that chocolate is bad for a dog's health. I try to hide any chocolate or sweets from her reach. This morning we had a caramel Lindt chocolate bar open on the table and we served a guest. I went to do laundry and when I came back, I found the wrapper and half of the chocolate was eaten. She is not ill but I am very annoyed that my dog jumped up on the chair and pulled the chocolate off the table, not for the chocolate's sake but for hers. Silly dog. Why do dogs love chocolate? I have no clue.

Why shouldn't they? I once read a report about animals which love sugar although they don't get into contact with it in their natural habitat. Even tigers do! Elephants wait until fermented fruit falls off a certain kind of tree. It tastes sweet and the elephants get drunk eating it. They enjoy this immensely. It's only dangerous for people who travel through the area. It can happen that a tipsy elephant decides to sit on their car trunk to take a rest because it can't walk straight anymore.

The is the theobromine contained in the chocolate that is dangerous for dogs. Humans metabolize theobromine, but dogs do not, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.

I heard that the chocolates will be unhealthy for dogs. It will lead them die. I am surprised that your dog seems to stay well even if she likes it.

She does not look ill, but you must stop her eating chocolate or she will be ill later. Also humans love food that make them sick, look at the garbage food.

@tzwrites The chocolate damages the liver of the dogs, it's for that reason that they must not eat chocolate.

I don't either; especially when it can kill them @tzwrites . Maybe she's missing some kind of vitamin in her food that's causing the craving.

@tzwrites Very true. Just reading the labels is ridiculous. There's a lot of garbage that doesn't even need to be in them either. Blue Buffalo and Wilderness seem to be the best out there, but man are they expensive.

Maybe, I don't trust the pet foods to have all the nutrients they claim to have.

I don't know why they love OT but yes it isn't good for them. My friends who has a lot of dog don't feed them with chocolate because their hair will fall out.

I have never had a dog die from eating chocolate. The worst that has ever happened is maybe they were too hyper after. In small amounts it won't hurt them especially if it is not an everyday thing. My pets have eaten just about every thing I have even if it was just a taste. I probably would have been upset that they ate my candy lol. We have made those mistakes before leave dinner on the stove go to the store and come back to find they have some how found a way to get it and eat as much as they possibly could. So now no leaving food out where it could be reached by them and no pets inside especially if nobody is home to watch them.

The dog is being a dog. Its the humans who have to ensure the chocolate is out of the way. My dog loves fresh baked bread which I learned the hard way a couple of times so now I keep it far away from him.
