Happy Friday! To celebrate the weekend here's another Saturday song! Last Saturday I started my countdown of favorite songs with "Saturday" in the title. I know people have been waiting with bated breath for the "obvious" song to show up. Well, here it is. #4: Let's Kill Saturday Night - Robbie Fulks And, in one of those ironic twists of fate, I should be seeing the two-time Grammy nominee tomorrow night. Alas, one of the side effects of asthma, sinusitis, and all the other issues I've been enduring for the past month is an inner ear infection, which causes dizziness. I don't want to drive 200 miles with the fear of getting dizzy in the middle of a traffic jam. But anyway, back to the song. This is one of Fulks' best-known songs. It's also been recorded by other artists -- by Pinmonkey, and by Silkworm. Yeah, that helps you, doesn't it? The title track from Robbie's sole "big label" album (the label folded shortly after the album was released, leaving Fulks without any promotion for what should have been a commercially successful album) is all about escaping the drabs ("a dollar I make is a buck I owe and a 40-hour week leaves ten to blow") for one night ("give me one night with the moon high and the radio pounding, and brother, this town's gonna go down kickin' and shoutin'"). I've seen Robbie do this song every way imaginable: solo (in Atlanta), with a rocking band (in Chicago), and with various bluegrass combinations (all over the place). It's one of my favorites (despite the fact that I was taken aback by the non-country sound of the song and album when it first came out), and always a crowd favorite. That sucks that you are going to miss him, seeing how it would have been your first time and all. Seriously, always a treat.

I would love to see him there, just for the jokes he'll make over the name of the town. He's playing in Effingham, Illinois. (I stayed there once when I saw him in downstate Illinois. He asked where I was staying and I said, "Effingham," and he said, "Don't cuss like that!" ) As for the town's name, I'm just glad whoever named it wasn't upset over shrimp cocktail!!!!

I haven't seen him in a month, and I've seen three concerts since. Give me a break.
