I can never forget that morning my then eleven year old son was standing at the fence just outside our house waiting for his bus to take him to school. The bus arrived, I saw him board it then I went back into the house. Exactly five minutes later, I heard a loud crash and I rushed to the door to see what it was about. There I saw my fence partly demolished by a car and a few people about to assist the driver out of the car.I stood there in shock, because the car had landed at the same spot where my son was standing before his bus came - I could have lost him - or he could have been seriously injured. Later I found out that the driver who was a seventeen year old girl, had no driver's license, nor any real driving lessons. She simply got up that morning and decided to take her father's car and go for a ride. At what age did you learn to drive, and who taught you? was it a family member, a friend or a driving instructor.? Picture is my son at age five.

What a cute photo of your son. He was lucky, indeed, as were you! My dad taught me how to drive when I was 16.

@DianneN He is my only son - only child in fact and I do still worry about his safety even though he is a young man now and living on his own.

I am thankful every day . That is why we should make the most of every day - we can't tell what lies in the future.

A cute picture of your son. How scary that must have been. Life can change in an instant. Glad that the bus was there that day before the young girl. Makes you wonder what you possess a person to do such a thing. I got my license when I was 23. I took a driving course.

I don't know what punishment she received, but her parents were very angry. At least they fixed my fence, but nothing could have been fixed if my son had been there and was seriously injured.

I had lessons as soon as I was 17. I was the first of my siblings to pass my driving test. I think back in those days it was an incredible £1.75 but eventually went up to £2.50 I think it is around £20 a lesson perhaps more in London.

@Kandae11 Yes and an hours lesson was exactly that not 45 minutes or 50 minutes as they seem to be today!

That is very lucky it happened 5 minute later after your son was already gone. I would have been very shaken up. My parents started teaching me to drive when i was 17 ( I was too nervous at 16). I did however steal the car twice when I only had my permit. Good thing nothing happened.

@Kandae11 yes she was and I am sure she was punished for it. What I did was very irresponsible too!
@Kandae11 (53679)

Many teenagers do that, but the majority like yourself - at least have a permit and know the basics of driving. That girl was very irresponsible.

You are right, if that girl had the proper home training she won't be so reckless.

My parents taught me to drive when i was old enough to get a permit. I think I had to be 16 and I got my drivers license that year too. I lived in NY in the country so there was not much traffic to deal with.

Parents would be concerned about your safety on the road, therefore they would be very good teachers.

That was scary. I learnt with a tutor and i was 20. I could not take the risk of injuring anyone. I wonder how stupid the girl was to just take her dads car and go out. Its a senseless act. On the other side your son is so cute.

Thank you. Well, her dad was real angry and I don't know what sort of disciplinary action was taken. It was indeed a very stupid act - she could have injured my son , herself - or anyone on the street.

@Kandae11 i hope she got some punishment which she never forgets

He was lucky. Thankfully nothing happened. I started to learn when I was 18 but only drive after my dad passed away. Driving comes with huge responsibility, not just our life but others as well. I hope she learnt something from this.

That certainly was a miracle that your son wasn't standing there when the car hit the fence. I learned to drive when I was very young by my grandfather so when I was of legal age to get a license I passed the first try.

Great! I was telling someone recently that it is a good thing we aren't aware of how many unlicensed drivers zoom past us daily - and there are some who buy their licenses.

I understand your fear. I have been in places here in Jerusalem that when they were bombing our buses and restaurants and have been at that same spot and then maybe a few minutes later or that morning was at the same spot a bus and a restaurant got blown up. I am glad you son was not injured or murdered.
