You Have Heard: No Pain No Gain? What About No Bed No Pain

*{Bracketed words added by keyboard. More on that later.} Last night the wheel under the {{best}} right side of my bed broke off. When my husband picked up the {{house}} right side of that portion of the bed I picked up the wheel, but I couldn't feel any hole to put it back into. In fact another section of the frame broke off too. That gave me a good reason to check my curiosity and sleep on the recliner. Best sleep at night since coming home, although the first or second nights may have been fine. Main difference is that in the bed I can usually sleep four hours before using the loo, {{a hard}} whereas it was {{the words}} two hours the first time, before using the loo, and three hours the second. I feel pretty rested and thought I'd write a bit before trying to sleep again. I can always nap again after my first physical therapy session at 9:15am. *(Edit: since this is still being read, I slept a couple of nights on the recliner and then moved to the couch since I was concerned that the rest of the bed would fall and my husband would need the recliner. Last Friday, as we were trying to put wood under my end of the bed, I discovered that a post was there and there was a hole under it to receive the wheel. We put the wheel back and the bed's been stable since then. We need to buy a newer used mini-van type vehicle within the next three weeks or so as our business will start back up again. I won't be working but my employees will and the customers will be ready. Maybe by next year we can find a newer bed for ourselves. I'll be moving back to the bed tomorrow night. I may decide the couch is easier to get onto and off of, but we'll see). Some extra info as I replied to Anna's response on my last post is here:
During the day my pain is normally zero except when I'm doing certain exercises, then it may be 2-3. During the night is a different story. I don't know whether...

Our recliner is quite old since my parent's had it at the house I grew up in and they didn't move until 1991. The foot rest isn't the greatest, but it's much better than the last recliner we adopted from a friend. Although it's a bit hard to get in and out of, I can at least get my feet right up to the recliner and raise myself up with the handle rather than having to injure my hip or thigh raising up my leg onto the bed. My hip/thigh still hurts, but not as bad as it was after sleeping in the bed. Those mornings I thought I'd be needing hip surgery after all. Not so right now. I'm going to try out the couch to see if having my feet up higher makes a big difference and see if I'm able to sleep there. My husband doesn't think it will work, but he's a bigger guy and wouldn't fit. Plus, I can usually nap in about any chair, we'll see if I can do the same with sleeping.

We actually fixed the bed after all. We'll need a new one eventually, but want to wait until next year since a new work vehicle is a bigger priority.

It's been a few days now how are you doing at night now? Still sleeping on that recliner. Sounds like you may need a new bed frame.

@MarshaMusselman I was lucky and this house was furnished when I moved in as it was my grandparents. I got rid of the mattresses but kept all the frames and the box springs from their bed.

We almost bought a new bed frame but they are ninety dollars for just a frame. So, in the meantime we discovered that the piece which is a post that comes down off the frame was still intact and I put the wheel back in again. We'd like to wait a year for a newer bed, so hoping this will work for now.

I would imagine that a good recliner would be much better then a bed, glad that you discovered this, hoping that you'll get many more good nights sleep here.

@MarshaMusselman Our mattress is about that old and it is ready for replacement. We'll keep it another couple of weeks, but we won't take it with us when we move. We will take it to the transfer station and have a new one delivered, but our box springs is fine. My husband wants an entire new bedroom suite, but I'm undecided on that right now.....there are so many decisions already with moving that its getting to be a bit overwhelming. I hope that the recliner does until you can get a new bed.

@Juliaacv I'm trying out the couch tonight. The couch doesn't make noise when I get in and out like the recliner does. On the other hand, it's easier standing up while at the recliner than on the couch. I'm concerned that if the other side of the bed breaks soon, my husband won't sleep on the couch. If it works for me then he can have the recliner. We may look at frames and beds this week, but I'd rather wait before buying. Hubs wants to buy a wooden frame while I was thinking of seeing if they had frames that could work for either queen or king sized beds. I'd like to switch back to a queen. If we waited and got a queen we could get the kind with the built in headboard storage and maybe even the side tables on each side. Except that kind could be quite expensive. I've always liked looking at them but never considers as it always seemed to be over our need. We'll see.

It's not the best recliner in the world, and it's quite old, but it worked out better than the bed was. It may be time for a new bed again. My husband would like to get a better frame, but I'd rather try out a queen sized bed rather than the king we've had these past eight or more years. Since I lost weight three years ago, we should be able to fit into a queen easier than we did previously. I'm not sure whether he can wait until we have the resources to get a whole new bed or not.

If you mean the knee replacement? Actually, my pain from that has been almost nil. Other things are the painful problems like my ankle swelling up and my toes and foot. In fact, I need a break from my desktop computer so I can get my ankle above my heart. I tend to nap in that position. They say to only do it for one hour before walking around to get the blood flowing again. Problem is when I'm napping I don't want to get up then Since I am taking a full-strength aspirin for a few months, hopefully a blood clot won't be an issue.

so, do you feel better and sleep better in the recliner?

Yes, I'm back to being able to sleep with hardly any pain at all, mostly discomfort if anything. Last night I slept on the couch and that worked well too. I can keep my feet higher on the couch, so that's probably where I'll sleep for a while.

@ridingbet No, that would be hard to manage I'd think. Plus I still have staples in my knee, and my left ankle is quite swollen. Maybe one day I'll try sleeping on my side once again, but other than a few short bursts of time I've not been able to sleep on my side in over a year. Last November, I got sciatica. It wasn't quite as bad as others get as I didn't have the shooting pains down my leg. But, I found it made my hips worse when I slept on either side and that was my preferred way to sleep. Just this past month before the surgery I was beginning to be able to again sleep on my side for a bit longer. If I slept on my side now I'd have to put a pillow between both legs. I don't think that would work along with raising my swollen ankle. I think the nurses in the hospital helped me turn to one side while there but until I have full use of my leg again I don't think I'll try it. Or maybe once I can return to my own bed.

I remember reading that you were gonna leave extra words in and bracket them. It is alarming that your bed is breaking.

It happened at an unfortunate time, but probably any time it happened wouldn't fit into our schedule. So far my husband's side is staying together. I wonder why my side is worse since I'm lighter. Maybe my side got more exercise on it before my husband went into the hospital himself in 2014.

I am so glad that worked, we know that our recliner is a great place to sleep since hubs and I nap in it so often lol

That's one main reason why I was curious already. Each time I've napped these past three days I didn't have any pain whatsoever. It didn't make sense to have more pain while sleeping than awake other than when awake I'm getting some exercises in and walking about a bit more.

The recliner is the best spot where to sleep after a surgery. Take a nap later, you need to rest.

The first one was although it was a bit scary too. I picked the person to do it with, someone I had several years ago when I was trying to postpone a knee replacement. Before leaving the hospital I got my angle when my feet are near the seat of the chair sitting like normal, I got it up to 5 degrees. The goal was 90. I found out a short time later that the ultimate goal or what most people can do if they don't have any knee pain is about 120 degrees. Yesterday, she was able to get my leg up to 95 which it hadn't been up to yet. It did take a while, but she showed me another way to increase me pulling my foot back toward the chair while on it and that was to tap my toes a few times up and down. Each time I did as she asked, I was able to pull my let in even further. I'm hoping I get a break from pushing that, but in the mean time, I need to continue to push it more and more at home. I can feel the stretch right now where it is and I'm sure it's far from the 89 degree goal. But at least it is getting the necessary stretch. Maybe by next week it will be much easier to manage this. Even though it's still tight, it's still easier today than it was before my session yesterday. When it felt as it does now, I thought I was hurting it. Even though it doesn't really hurt/hurt. Just mainly uncomfortable. At least she massaged my leg in between trying to work it harder. I did the majority of the work, but she did help me pull my foot in closer to my butt. At that time I was laying down on a table.

Yes it is, you must have seen me say that somewhere around the block. I've not slept in it again yet, but I'm thinking of moving all my stuff back in there for tomorrow night. We'll see whether the wheel falls off again with the way I have to swing my leg up and down to get back and forth. I'm hoping that by the end of this week I'll have more flexibility and be able to work my leg without thinking much about it. If that works out, then maybe I won't need to make any more changes right now.
