A Shining Star in the Cabinet

She's a shining star in the Duterte (President Duterte's) cabinet. I am referring to Secretary Gina Lopez of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). I had been watching on television the confirmation hearings on her appointment as DENR secretary, and there were about 17,000 Filipinos who had been supporting her appointment. There were also oppositors, mostly from the mining companies which Ms. Lopez ordered investigated for non-compliance with safety standards set by the DENR especially those that ruin the environment. On Tuesday, next week, it will be known if she will win the "battle" and finally be appointed as the DENR secretary. I wish she could pass the appointment. She is pro-environment and pro-people.

I'm certain she can... Then she will be the next vice President in the coming years.

We don't know about that. She had been a crusader for the environment several years ago. Maybe she would not like to enter politics per se.

She might be taking on a big challenge if the mining companies are against her appointment.

Yes, and up to now the Senators are deliberating if she will get the post or not.

Yes, she is. She had shown it even before she joined the government.

It is in the name of development, but Ms. Lopez stressed that there should be responsible mining. And that the resources should be enjoyed by the people and not the mining companies only.
