Washington National release catcher Derek Norris

The Washington Nationals on Sunday have released their catcher Derek Norris. Norris became expendable when the Nationals signed former Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Weiters to a two year, $21 million dollar contract on February 21, 2017. The silver lining in the dark cloud is that Norris could be claimed off waivers by another team in the Major Leagues that will need the services of the 28 year old catcher who had a pretty good performance with the Nationals during the spring training games in 2017. The Orioles will only have to pay Norris about $700,000 out of his $4.2 million dollar salary in 2017 if he was released by March 15, 2017. Look at it as a business decision to release Norris than a player who is past his prime at age 28.

It was rumored this was going to happen. He will get picked up. Solid catching credentials are always in demand.

That is true since Derek was too expensive to stay with the Nationals this year.
