GMOs are good or bad?

The controversy whether GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism) are good or bad for health is going on for last few years. Today, I was reading a blog where someone has commented that GMOs are unhealthy. The writer did not provide much data to prove that claim. Like this writer, most people believe GMOs are bad without knowing the exact reason. In my opinion, there may be some GMOs which are bad but mostly it is good. And keeping in mind of the world population, we can not say no to GMOs. GMOs are required to feed all the people in this world. In fact we are using GMOs from a long time but the GMO issue recently became popular. I do not know th eproper reason for this. What is your opinion about GMOs?

@amadeo Exactly. Might be this is the new business policy. They put a high price saying it is "organic" or "no gmo" but actually products are same.

I agree with what you wrote, but we should be vigilant so that the usual big companies do not profit of this situation.

What I feel, in the name of non-GMO the companies are getting lot of profits. And they are sponsoring to keep GMO issue live.

Just the first 2 words should have people terrified @ichchhe_mrityu . Genetically Modified means that the seeds have been chemically changed from their natural design. They are no longer Heritage Seeds either which means they cannot be reused (reseeded); which makes it more expensive. Not to mention the chemical compounds that we as humans are not meant to ingest. Why do you think there are more cases of cancer, autism, ADD and ADHD? Genetically Modified seed chemically change the brain.

Well Genetically modified organisms can be reseeded. I mean a tree which is was created from a genetically modified seeds can have next generation of trees with it's seeds. Also the way you are thinking it is changed chemically - No, it is not. It is genetically modified where different techniques are there. Probably you are confusing with organic and non-organic products. Non-organic vegetables are nurtured with inorganic fertiliser, pesticides etc. The remains of these inorganic compounds create problem for sure. I was reading more, and found out this interesting paper which says: An equilibrium in the number research groups suggesting, on the basis of their studies, that a number of varieties of GM products (mainly maize and soybeans) are as safe and nutritious as the respective conventional non-GM plant, and those raising still serious concerns, was currently observed.

I think GMOs are bad because it's chemically changing the seed. Yes, it could be a good thing for food shortage.

Well this is not chemically changed. Chemicals are related to organic vegetables and non organic vegetables. Genetic engineers are using different techniques to genetically modify it.

I don't really like the fact that we have GMO food but I guess it's necessary.

Yes and maximum time you will not be able to differentiate between GMO and natural food.

I think GMO is both good and bad. Depends on your perspective. Just like you said GMOs are feeding a lot of people in this world. But we now have a solution for hunger. Therefore, getting populated. If we start banning GMO's and all of us resort back to organic, I guess the population will be controlled, because food price will skyrocket. I'm not an expert. Just my opinion.

@ichchhe_mrityu Hey, I eat GMO's everyday. I eat rice. I wouldn't know whats difference in taste if its GMO or not. And I don't think that people will cease to eat GMO's products because it will cause harm in the long run. People are more afraid to get hungry than die in the future. Told you, it depends on the people's perspective.

@diosabella Yes! We all are eating GMOs and we have to. But at the same time all GMOs are not bad - what I feel.

@ichchhe_mrityu Nah its not. Unless we evolve into zombies right? Not every one can afford organic too. And I like the sweet smell coming out of jasmin rice.

I have read that the differences between GMO and organic are only 10 to 15 % only.
