He Lopped it off! (Did he cut off his hand for this?)

Great Great Grandfather's Draft Card

No, I highly doubt he did. Though just the wording itself suggests it. "Has person lost arm, leg, hand, eye or is he obviously physically disqualified? (specify)" That's the question asked on a draft card form for my great great grandfather. The response? "Left Hand Off." So was he born without a left hand? Or did he lose it in a farming accident? OR did he cut it off so he didn't have to go to war? We'll never know... (In all seriousness, I'd hope he simply lost it or was born without it.)

Probably a farming accident. A lot of those.

That's what I figured as well. I hope he wasn't left handed.

@celticeagle Couldn't imagine it. Had to write with my left hand when I was in school. I had to have stitches on my right and couldnt't use it for awhile.

It creates more mysteries than it solves to know this.

I am sure I never will know. No one in my immediate family would know this at any rate. In fact, the only "immediate family" I have left is my dad and aunt.

OH. wow.. I wonder if there is any research you can do to find out more about this mystery.

Highly doubtful. It would probably have been written down in some bible somewhere, if anything. Or in some manner of correspondence between family. Either way, I have none of that stuff available to me.

I have enough pesky relatives now, don't need any pesky ancestors!

Hopefully. That would be a most drastic way to avoid military service.
