She does look a bit sad. It would be huge upheaval bringing such a big family to a foreign land and leaving all she knew behind.

Although she is a beautiful lady, her eyes do look sad, and they say that our true feelings come thru in our eyes, so maybe it was fear of the huge change coming to North America, imagine the many changes they must have had to face-learning a new language, finding their way around, finding a home, a job and a school for all of those kids. My eyes usually speak volumes about how I am feeling. Today they are saying that I am tired!

I had already noticed your mother's sad eyes when you posted other photos. Leaving your country for another it is sad, if you hope for a better life. She surely left her family and friends in Italy. She had to learn a new language and adjust to different culture. It must have been very hard.

I am sure it was very hard for her living in a foreign country and had to learn a new language. I even can relate to that.

The reason may be a bit of everything you've mentioned here.

It's hard to make a judgment about a person based on one photo. Do all her photos have sad eyes? It might be just a temporary thing. Leaving home and making a new life can be sad and frightening but it is often exciting and interesting too. Having lots of children means a weary life, but also lots of love and laughter. It could be any number of temporary reasons that her eyes are sad in this photo. What a beautiful woman you mother was. We all have our sad moments as women. She must have been very strong and able to do all she did! Good for her!

I'd have to see a photo of her with happy or normal eyes to make a comparison.

A lot happened in her life and she probably had a lot of her mind. Back then people kept a lot to themselves. I have very expressive eyes. People tell me that all the time. I can't hide my emotions because my eyes give it away.

Actually to me it is her mouth that makes her appear sad or maybe apprehensive.

Yes, she looked sad. Maybe she was missing home in Italy. She was homesick and missing her friends and relatives at home. She was not sure of what the future would bring to her in a foreign country.
