Our local Jewish Community Center was one of several that were evacuated over the past few weeks after phoned-in or e-mailed bomb threats. When I checked the local news channel's web site a few minutes ago, the "breaking news" was that an arrest has been made in connection with that threat, as well as several others throughout the US and Canada. It was a Jewish teenager in Israel. Major WTF (What The Firetruck?????) moment. That's like a Catholic making terroristic threats against the Vatican. I'm sure he had his reasons...but none of them that I can think of make any sense to me. If he doesn't like his religion, he can leave (unlike other religions, that threaten you with death if you leave the faith). The list of people who are ethnically Jewish but don't practice the religion of Judaism is long (a couple of quick cases in point: the late Gene Wilder said in an interview, when asked about his beliefs, he was "an atheistic Jewish Buddhist;" and two-thirds of the band Rush are ethnically Jewish but not religiously so). I ache for this kid. I really do. I hurt that he thought this was funny. I hurt even more if he thought he was trying to "prove" something.

Sometimes there is no way of understanding what is going on in a person's mind.
