Inspector Morse by Colin Dexter

Last week, my dear old friend Colin Dexter passed away at his home in Oxford. Colin is the author of a series of books about a grump police officer in Oxford - Inspector Morse - played on TV by the late John Thaw. I first met Colin many years ago when he boarded a bus which I was driving in our City. I was thrilled, and I said, with great enthusiasm, "Hello Mr Dexter", at which point Colin came close to my ear and asked "Who's this Dexter bloke ? ... Call me Colin young man !" - he said, putting me at immediate ease and privilege. As the years ticked by, I have enjoyed many a drink with Colin at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford, in 'The Morse Bar' named after Colin's famous character and used in many a scene in the films. I'd like the whole world to know that Colin was the nicest Gentleman who anyone could ever wish to meet. He always had time for everyone and had no heirs and graces about himself. He shared his life with the City and its people and never once did he place himself above others. Even during deep conversation, Colin would stop and give time for tourists to speak with them and give them photos if they recognised him. His brilliance has given us the most intriguing books to read and films in which to become engrossed, and his humility, patience and kindness has broken this guy's heart with his passing. Heaven is a better place with his presence. Rest in Peace you dear old friend. We'll all miss you. Aron - your "My Old Mate" as you used to say. .

How wonderful! I am envious you met him. I am a Morse fan and just read a couple books recently before Dexter passed away.

@JohnRoberts John, please accept a belated welcome to our City and I hope you enjoyed it. I've not been fortunate enough (yet) to visit Los Angeles, but it's certainly on my bucket list,
