The call centre conscription course process went from bad to worse today. I got in nice and early and found we had to complete an online application form before we were shown any company specifics at all. The form said nothing about the contract hours or rotas but asked if we are credit risks. I admitted that I am, as their checks will uncover it anyway. Rather than notify the company of this game over problem , my tutor Insisted on collecting in all completed forms so she can mail them out for us and then told us, including me, that we have to attend an assessment day to complete a two and half hour exam paper, and even told us what day it is on – next Wednesday. I asked for an early slot as I have some voluntary work that afternoon. I was told that the time is fixed and mandatory – in other words, forget anything else you had booked or planned at that time – fortunately the exam time I received I bizarrely from 5pm to 7.30pm at night. It means I have a long day. It starts two hours after my voluntary work ends. Equally bizarrely, the interview itself, at a time and date undeclared but now in danger of clashing with my already booked and paid for convention train travels, take place regardless of the outcome of the tests which won’t be marked until later. Utterly ridiculous. The company Is treating me like it already owns me before I even set foot in their offices (the course Is run supposedly independently at a nearby college). Back home to overcome my anger and stress, I treated myself to a chippy tea. I also cancelled my convention hotel booking as I found another place to stay at half the price. (if this hateful mandatory job process doesn’t force my cancellation completely). Arthur Chappell

@thislittlepennyearns French Fries are called chips here - chips from a fish and chip shop are a chippy tea to us Northerners

They sound very disorganised, and I'm not surprised that you were stressed. Nothing like a chippy tea - lovely.

Isn't there a way to get a job other than go through this torture? I think I'd rather clean up somewhere rather than this.

@Jessicalynnt very much that - they have people above them ordering them to get results at any cost or put their own jobs on the line

@arthurchappell seems really stupid, but then again, I think the welfare workers perhaps have their own "quota' they have to prove or something, so they force you into stupid things as well

An exam that lasts about as long as one for a GCSE and eats into an evening? That's ridiculous!

@asfarasiknow it is pretty stupid - the company thinks it owns the time of its applicants even before we get employed

So they're insisting that you go through this rigmarole in order to apply for a position which they won't give you anyway because you don't fit their criteria? This seems a complete waste of everybody's time. Have you considered writing to your MP?

That's too bad they are making you do all of this and you can't tell them to shove it.
