The Scarificator! Medical Instruments of the Past

I am watching a documentary on youtube hosted by BBC. It is about Victorian Pharmacy. It is quite interesting so far, talking about all the instruments the Victorians (and even further back) used to "cure" the sickly. The Scarificator has made me cringe the most, atleast so far. I am only about 30 minutes into the documentary. They just showed a tool where a press of a lever would "spring" forth several (up to 20) small blades that would puncture the skin and thus allow for bloodletting. I couldn't imagine having to go through that, even if the pain from it lasted only a few moments. I was just looking on ebay and apparently there is someone selling one for $240.00. They can keep it! For anyone interested : That is the link to the documentary I am watching.

Oh but it would only hurt for a second! I am sure you'd soon become too weak to feel any pain anyway... Not to mention the infections you surely got because I think these were invented before disinfectants were.
