The underbelly is getting bigger …

and no amount of SlimFast will help. Throughout eternity, there’s always been a seedy, slimy side of society. We knew it existed and called it the “underbelly.” Many of us innocents didn’t know exactly where it was or exactly what happened in that underbelly. It was mysterious, more myth than reality. Unfortunately, that underbelly is spreading rapidly, reaching into our everyday lives. It is insidious. It appears immune to treatment, like a new age virus that no longer responds to treatment. It’s not just politics, an obvious culprit, which is so slimy and hateful it’s destroying our country. It’s not just child and animal abuse, too depressing to discuss here. It’s not just the terrorists waiting to take us down. It’s the minor nitpicky things in our daily lives, sometimes right in our own neighborhoods and homes, that are being threatened. I’m sure you can relate: On any given day, my phone calls include “To avoid arrest, press one now to speak with an IRS representative, and have a blessed day.” I love the religious touch. My emails include one I got this morning, alerting me my package was ready and to schedule delivery. There is no package ready but it’s truly depressing how many predators out there are making a good living by trying to destroy mine. Anyone remember Rachel from Card Services? For years her recorded voice called me regarding my account. What account? I haven’t heard from her in quite a while. Hopefully, she’s in the slammer. When we think underbelly, it’s no longer just the drug dealers, prostitutes, rapists, human traffickers, petty thieves, etc. It’s that gal at the other end of the phone trying to screw you out of your money or steal your identity. It’s that guy stealing your purse at Walmart. It's that bully making your kid's life a living hell, or that creep in the parking lot hijacking your car. There’s really little left that’s safe or sacred anymore. Terribly depressing. Sorry for the rant. Image: Pixabay

I agree. Did I not trust in God, I would despair. Those of us in California are facing increased crime if they make us a sanctuary city. Our sheriff talked about how our legislators and governor have limited his ability to enforce our laws and how he has to put criminal illegals back on the street because he's in violation of state law now if he detains them for deportation. The voters also passed a badly named initiative that lets violent felons loose because the state government refined violent crime so it doesn't include things like some assaults and rapes. But another new law being proposed will make it a felony for an employee to call someone in a nursing home or assisted living facility by a title like Mr. or Mrs. that is not gender neutral while actual violent criminals go free. Anything wrong with this picture?

@minx267 Probably not unless you say you are transgender and are offended. If you are straight I don't think you count.

This world has turned into a very dark place with only a little bit of light left in it. That's why I try to be a light to others when I can.

@enlightenedpsych2 Maybe your surrounded by better people than I have come across. If that's the case your blessed and you should feel lucky. I on the other hand have seen very evil people and the things they are capable of, very scary world we live in.

That's a very good goal you're working on. Sometimes I'm the light but sometimes I'm not. The world is very dark, which is a sad thing for our childrens' futures.

Yes anymore the Thieves are made out to be the Good guys, and fall prey to so many people and have a lot of the elderly falling for their scams and being scammed. Right now again it is IRS scams. Wishing their was a way to stop them so all you can be is cautious

I agree. I've had several IRS calls so far. It's unbelievable the number of predators out there, especially those targeting the elderly.

It's been around for decades but the internet has put a brand new spin on it. Mom got scammed in 1999. She was 83, a few short years later they passed a law making it a felony to scam the elderly ..... still wondering if anyone ever got results from that law. It's not new news, it's just taken a back seat to the big stuff until now. I don't answer any phone call from a number I don't know.

I answer no calls unless I know who it is. I do listen to the messages if there is one. The internet definitely plays a big part in this, and so invasive.

These days we really have to be well informed on web ins and outs @LindaCPearson otherwise we'd fall victim to those scum waiting to take us for all we're worth.

I know but then something truly good happens and I get my faith in humanity back for at least a day or two. And no, Rachel isn't in the slammer she called me last week.

I haven't heard from "Rachel" in awhile, but apparently "Card Services" has replaced her because I have started getting calls again. The ironic thing is they have been calling about my credit card since before I had credit cards.

Doesn't it all just give you that warm, fuzzy feeling!! So awful and getting worse. It's a good thing Mildred doesn't answer the phone or I'd be in bit trouble!
