Why do our rating points sometimes go down?

A moment ago I posted a response to a post someone made on a discussion I started, nothing unusual at all about the content (it was about sewing), and normally I'd expect my rating to stay the same when I post to a discussion I started. Oddly enough though, as soon as I clicked post, my rating went down by a point. Any idea why?

i read it in a post about this.after starting a discussion the rating will decrease a point and if somebody respond to you it will be incremented.i haven't checked that.Probably that may be the reason for your's also

Hmm, it doesnt always seem to do it though, just once in a while. Very odd!
