Can I Kill My Sister?

She is the biggest procrastinator on the planet. She adopted two dogs from the animal shelter that I ran six years ago. The dogs Kate and Daisy were 2-years old at the time. Now mind you, the one dog she had at the time Rambo was 13-years old when he was diagnosed with cancer. My sister comes to visit twice a year; at my birthday and X-mas and always brings the dogs with her. When she had Rambo and came down I noticed he had 'lumps' on his body and I told her to have it checked, that I believed that it was cancer. She put it off and put it off until he looked like nothing but skin and bones. She finally took him in and it was too late to do anything. She took him home and he died a SLOW and very PAINFUL death because she wouldn't have him put to sleep. Three weeks ago we were talking on the phone and she said either Kate or Daisy was urinating on her bedding. I said something is wrong. Two weeks ago she figured out it was Kate. I said something is wrong. One week ago she said Kate was still doing it and drinking tons of water. I said something is wrong. She finally took Kate to the vet on Thursday and they weighed her and she was 69 pounds which is too much for this dog and her glucose was 600!!!!!!! Mind you, a dogs glucose should be 110. Kate has Type II Diabetes and will require daily insulin shots. My sister can't even clip her dogs' toenails, let alone take the TIME to give the shots. She complained about the fact that this vet visit was $240 and that Kate would have to stay at the vets one day a week for the next month so they can start the shots and monitor her levels; which will cost $60 each time. Not to mention the cost of the insulin. Do you know what my sister told the vet???? "Let me THINK about it." Say what????!!!!!! I told her, "There ain't no thinking about it. You either do it or have the dog put to sleep." "Do you want this to turn out like Rambo did?" I told her that it's very easy to give the shots. So I don't know what she's going to do but I can tell you one thing, I could beat the crap out of her for waiting when I TOLD her something was wrong.

Pets are truly a part of the family. They can get the same illnesses, but the difference is -- they can't talk about it.

I know right? It drives me crazy @Kandae11 . The part that really makes me mad is that she'll ask for my ADVICE and then not follow it.

I can't blame your outburst. However, is your sister knew about dogs? I don't know about dogs. I do have dogs but in terms of sustaining the healthy lifestyle, I really don't have any idea. You may educate her.

She had had Rambo for 13 years @dhoyalahoy . Dogs need regular veterinarian visits like children need to see the doctor once a year. There are specific shots that dogs need to stay healthy and safe from certain diseases that dogs can catch. Besides having the dog neutered or spayed. My sister knows better.

@nanette64 I see. It's a good learning for us. Maybe if you can post about what dogs need, mylotters will appreciate it. We love dogs and we need to take care of them.

@dhoyalahoy I have done several articles in the passed. "Ear Mites and Your Pet", "Changing Your Pets Food", "When You Adopt a Dog". I guess I could do another one.

yes some people don't deserve a pet and just should not have one. i pampered coco for 14 yrs and spent a lot on her care. still had to put her down. i know myself i can not afford another although i miss having one and i don't want that hurt and guilt again. feeling i should have done more even though i could not. i always took her or got her taken to the vet as soon as possible. yet i still failed to keep her alive. so i just don't need that hurt even though i want another so bad.

The pain of losing one can definitely be over-whelming @bunnybon7 . It's not like having a Cockatiel or something that lives to be 50 years old.

It is so sad that her dogs have had to needlessly suffer because she would not take the time to find out what was going on. It isn't like the dog can take itself. They depend on us to tae good care of them and it sounds like she didn't.

@nanette64 Do you think part of the equation is that she knows you will do some of the maintenance on her pets for free?

It is very frustrating for me @HazySue . When she has come to visit, I do an inspection. I've had to clean ear mites out of the ears, trim the toenails and give 5-way shots. I was the one to find the first tumor on Rambo. Had she taken him to the vet and had it addressed, his outcome might have been different. He got so bad that she carried him outside just to use the bathroom. He laid in front of the fireplace just wasting away. I'd post a picture of him at that time but it would make you want to kill my sister too,

@nanette64 You are right, it would. I have no patience with anyone who mistreats an animal. To me that is neglect and cruel mistreatment.

She shouldn't be allowed to take the responsibility of dogs in the first place if she can't get on board with the requirements of caring for a dog.

Well no, you can't kill your sister but I see your frustration for sure. Honestly, it sounds like she likes the idea of having a pet but not the idea of taking care of one. It's a huge responsibility and she doesn't seem to take it seriously.

I think your comment is right on point. The attitude you describe is eerily similiar to that of a child who wants a pet but isn't interested in caring for the pet in a nurturing way.

@blitzfrick That drives me crazy too. When people use to come to the shelter to adopt, I would ask the kid a lot of questions and you'd be surprised how many times the kid said mom and dad would take care of the dog. I told the parents it probably wasn't a good idea.

She shouldn't adopted them in the first place if she can't take care of them. Taking care of your pets are like taking care of your children. There's a lot to do and think about. Just because pets can't complain, we should ignore them. That's really irresponsible.

It's such a shame that a dog has to suffer because of the ineptitude of the owner. So sorry that your sister doesn't think like you do.

She's suppose to be coming down for my BD at the end of this month @hostessman . If she isn't doing the do, I'll find a spot on my 16 1/2 acres for her to 'reside' in.

Are you the big sister? If so, she may have stuck in her rôle of the rebellious younger sister.

I see many pet owners who should never be allowed to go to a petting zoo, much less own an animal of any sort. If they "love" animals, they need to be loving them from a distance—that would be the most loving thing they could do for any animal.

Okay...I was taken aback when I read your headline...but now, i want to beat the crap out of her!. Some people are not meant to raise children or animals. Am animal pet is like a child and need lots of attention and care. Otherwise it is not humane. I had six cats and two dogs and the visits to the vet nearly send me bankrupt...but I can't bare to see an animal in pain.
