I have been hearing a lot of women in relationships or married refer to themselves as independent. Why is that? If you independent you would not be married or in a relationship right? You wouldn’t have kids and be a stay at home mother while the husband brings home the money. You would think if you’re an “independent” women you would have you own house, car, money etc…

I think that people call themselves independant for many reasons. They aren't attached to their spouse or SO at the hip, they could support themselves fiancially, they don't rely on their spouses or SOs for everything - those make you independant. Single, married or in a relationship.

Perhaps they mean career-wise. Are all of these women stay-at-home mothers? If so, perhaps they mean they are free spirits.

That is one type of independence, however you can be a wife and mother and still be independent. Self thinkers, who do things on their own and not wait for their husbands or friends to do it for them. Haven't you met independent children? They want to learn and do for themselves? They still have parents who care for and nuture them. Marriage is a partnership not a dependence.
