Watch Out For Verizon Wireless They tried to Cheat Me

My husband has a bad habit of leaving his flip cell phone in his pocket. It then goes through the laundry and he needs a new phone. We went to the Verizon store to replace it and the General Manager helped us. We always use the same store and I told him how much we liked this store. He tried to talk me into paying for the phone for two years, it is $49 I said no thanks I will pay for it today. All the billing was done electronically on his little tablet and he had me sign it there for the payment. I got no printed receipt, it was emailed to me. When I got home I had a message from Verizon thanking me for taking out the protection policy on the new phone at $9 a month. I was livid, I had not authorized that, it was never mentioned and he just tacked it onto the account assuming I guess, that I wouldn't notice. Seriously, $9 a month on a $49 phone? I called Verizon and they removed it from my account but I lodged a formal complaint, this was done without my knowledge or permission and I want that manager reprimanded. I have had a good relationship with Verizon up to this point but I suggest you look carefully at any transactions you have with them in the future. Very bad form guys!!!!

You were wise to check your receipt. We've been doing busy with them since car phones were invented - lol - and never had a problem with them in all these years. At least they were quick to fix your problem, but he really should have asked you first.

Yes I guess he was just hoping we would not notice or if we noticed we would keep it anyway.

You're right, Verizon must be watched very very carefully. Here's my horror story: A few years ago, Verizon tried to tell me I'd not paid a bill. I'd sent my payment early, and discovered their claim of non-payment when I'd gone to my account online to verify that they'd credited my payment. Thank goodness I am in the habit of insisting on a paper invoice and paying with a check. We went round and round for nearly a month. They would call me several times a day insisting that I pay a bill I'd already paid. I had to send them "proof of payment" several times. At one point, I had the bank call them to verify the check had been cashed, and even then, Verizon advised me to put a Stop Payment on the check. Are you kidding me? For me, it was like trying to communicate with a stone wall. I was at my wits' end. The calls became nastier and nastier. Finally, when Verizon threatened to cut off my service due to nonpayment, someone on Twitter suggested I register a complaint with the FCC. I did just that and when the harrassment started again the next day I told them I'd filed a complaint. Lo and behold, within an hour or two, they called to tell me my payment had been found. By then, the deadline for the next month's service was almost immediately due (If I recall correctly, it was due the next day.). But I cut them off at the pass, so to speak, by having already overnighted my payment to them. I still had a few months left on my contract and when it expired, I was astounded that they called me to offer some sort of deal to renew with them. I laughed out loud at their nerve, to make such a call. I now am a happy customer of Cricket— there's no contract. I signed up for unlimited talk and text service only. I use a little flip phone, but they offer smart phones and data plans also. I'v found their coverage to be extensive and reliable. I've been a little nervous about them since AT&T took them over, but everything has remained just fine so far (fingers crossed). Be ever vigilant, no matter what service you use. I'm a firm believer in hard copy and good record-keeping, especially with Verizon.

I have never had a payment issue with them I pay them electronically but I have had similar issues with checks with other companies. It is hard getting them to listen at times.Verizon doesn't have contracts anymore so we can come and go as we please.

@BelleStarr Nice that they don't have contracts! I told you that story to validate that they aren't trustworthy, and can become quite nasty in their dealings with customers. It's so trying, and frustrating, to come up against a big company like Verizon. Even if you get a good solution, filing a complaint with the FCC won't hurt and it might help you or others in dealing with Verizon.

@BelleStarr That is good that customer service was nice. That was very rude of that manager to do that especially after you complimented him on the store.

There has been quite a to-do for a fews years over here about the mis-selling of those protection services. People have been suing firms because of it. I'm glad that you noticed.

Yes, it is a sleazy practice especially since it is to their benefit no doubt to sell them. I always refuse the protection when asked.

@jaboUK I always tell them if it breaks with a year or two I will never buy another one of their products so I don't waste money on an extended warranty!!

Oh no that's very bad. I realise that when we be so good to people (dealers etc) they try to do this because they get to know our nature... My mom's chemist is very clever man, he always keeps suggesting new medicines to mom because that's costly... Now we became strict with him that we want only what we order for..

Well, at least they were able to take care of this, and make everything right. We had horrible experiences with Sprint when we had a phone die, and personally they were the Worst to ever work with. Even the customer service people on the phone we siding with them. We also have had issues with T-Mobile in a store with a Manager and assistant manager, but awesome service online. Just sometimes makes you wonder where these people get some of their customer service skills from, and why they want to be like this to someone?

I'm sorry to hear that you had trouble with them too. I had issue with Verizon too. Back in 2010 my granddaughter and I had a cell phone for about three months. I went through Verizon. I was told by the manager of the location that I went to what the charge would be. I also got a stick so I could have WiFi where we were at the time. It was supposed to be a certain amount. It wasn't. I called them about it. Two different people checked on this and acted flip about it and just said this is what they show.I was very upset about this and I asked to talk to that manager who had given me the quote. Oh, no he's on vacation right now. I asked them when he'd be back, they told me, and I called back then and spoke to him. He honored what he had said and gave me that amount on the bill. It really pays to watch these people and carry through when things don't go as they say they will. I won't use Verizon ever again because of the trouble I had with them. They lie and over look things. Think we won't notice. Customer service is horrible.

What's even annoying about that additional charge is that you know if he forgets and it goes in the wash again, that wouldn't be covered under the protection plan anyway. That's pretty bizarre that he tacked that on without saying anything about it first.

@BelleStarr I did too. I was surprised to read about what they tried to do to you. I don't use Verizon, but I always thought they were a good company. I thought the same about AT&T though until I started having trouble with them. They will soon be history in my life.

It's a good thing that you noticed. I can certainly understand why you were upset. The manager should have spoken to you about it and asked if you wanted it in the first place. He shouldn't have just put it on there without talking to you about it first.
