Potato chip crisis in Japan with a packet cost $14

That sounds very horrible to me. I do not usually buy potato chips, but then I never have to suffer through a potato chip crisis before. The potato harvest in Japan is destroyed by a series of typhoons, and now Japan does not have enough potato to make potato chips. I, for one, will not buy a packet of potato chip for $14. This is something I can live without.
An unprecedented series of typhoons last summer battered Hokkaido – a key spud-producing region – and decimated the island’s potato crop.

I guess lots of Japanese people will lose weight because of that! I would never pay a high price for potato chips.

@marlina that will be bad. Japanese are really slim. They do not have excess weight to lose. The BMI for many Japanese is just 20. If they start to lose weight, they will be walking skeletons soon.

Sure is crazy to spend so much for junk food. it is not as if a pack of potato chip can fill our stomach for a whole day.

@infatuatedbby Food in Japan is expensive, but this potato chip crisis really brings the price of it to a new height. I think if they do not resolve the problem soon, you will see a pack going for $50 in black market soon.

I like potato chips but it is crazy to cost so much to buy a packet. If Japan doesn't have enough potatoes because of the series typhoons, I think they can import them from other countries. And it will not even make the potato chips so expensive anyway.

Japan is one of those countries that protect their farmers, and do not allow cheap imports to lower the price of food. I think the government should make an exception in this case. Even if they do not import potatoes, they can import potato chips.

As long as this shortage is not manmade it will soon subside.

If government does not allow import of potato, it will probably take a year to go back to normal

@allknowing Japan is one of those countries that protect the farmers. Imports will mean lower price of food, and that will be bad for the farmers. That is why one small slice of watermelon can cost $5.

me too. Even when the potato chips are selling at discounted price, I do not buy them. Nothing will induce me to buy a pack at $14.

haha, if the government really wants to curb junk food, they can start imposing a tax, so that junk food is very expensive. I sure will not want to get potato chips at $14 per pack.

My oh my! I would say I can live without potato chips too but do you sometimes feel like wanting something you can't have? Now that they know how scarce potatoes are, do you think they suddenly have this urge to eat products made from potato?

wow i have never even heard of this crisis... that amount is very huge for a bag of chips... Rice is their staple food anyway, so maybe this isn't really a big down for them? But I really hope they can get through this crisis

Actually the Japanese diet is already keeping the people slim. It is when they feast on fast food and western diet then the problem of obesity surfaces.
