Why I Have Not Did Theatre In 5 Years

The last play I did was Urinetown in April 2011, I auditioned for another play called Dearly Departed in Sept. 2011 at the same local Theater I have always performed. I was so disappointed in not getting the part, Dearly Departed was a Southern Comedy and I felt the role I was auditioning for was hilarious and harkened back to my role as Ellard Simms in The Foreigner. The only reason I could ever come to terms with was that I had been in 6 shows in a two-year time span, and they wanted to cast talent whom we're new to our Theater. Watching the play and seeing who they cast really ticked me off, I wanted to be happy but here was someone giving the worse Southern accent i have ever heard by a guy who was a nice enough lad but whom sounded more Scottish then Southern. I started to think it was more because of who the directors were, they were a married couple and in every show they cast there son (whom granted is a tremendous actor) and people they were friendly with. Don't get me wrong I think they liked me fine, but do to the fact the previous two shows I had issues with another guy whom was one of there sons close friends, i think that really effected my working relationship with them. To go back in time a few years when i dated my very first boyfriend Franky he left me to date another guy, well this other guy Daniel happened to be a staple at the same community theater as me, and to make matters worse i ended up dating a guy named Ian we only went on a few dates but then i find out he is seeing Daniel, and is still texting me. So now not only am i being cast in a play Urinetown with Daniel, i find out after already being cast in the show that his current boyfriend Ian is also joining the cast. So imagine the awkwardness of being in a play with the man whom my ex boyfriend left me for, and my other ex boyfriend whom is now dating this guy, in essence two of my former boyfriends leaving me for the same guy. Well during Urinetown I had a awful time taking orders from Daniel whom designated himself as assistant choreographer and I made it clear I was not ok with this, he was not are choreographer and I did not want his assistance. He even had the gaul of making fun on my singing voice, which prompted me to almost quit the play, basically I said “They knew what my singing voice was when they cast me, if they didn't like it they should not have cast me” Which is true right? If you don't think someone can carry a tune why the hell are you casting them in a musical other then the fact they needed another body to prance around onstage. After this show ended I ended up dating a guy named Jordan whom happened to be Daniel's long term off and on boyfriend, so as with Theatre I think I ended up being considered uncooperative and a boyfriend stealer, even though the fact is he took two of my boyfriends so why could I not take one of his? LOL Anyway that is really only part of the story, a few years back I lost one of my front teeth, I am very self conscious about this fact and it has prevented me from dating, and is also a cause for a lot of my depression. I have not been able to get the proper dental care I need, and I know it will cost a fortune as the insurance I do have will not provide a lot, so it has a lot to do with problems with people involved in my Community theatre, but it also is a self confidence thing. The Photo is of one of my Headshots from when i was hoping to become an Actor.

You should continue to pursue acting, obviously you were no match against NEPOTISM. They should have focus on talent rather than connections if they want a great show.

maybe you just need a change of scenery. become an acting coach, a director, help out a production, play a role no one really wants. and try not to date coworkers. date people out of the business.

@Plethos I need to start volunteering there again, I use to usher at least 3 shows a season, each season there is usually 6 shows so half the season. It's pretty easy but it is a little annoying when the patrons want to argue with you that you lead them to the wrong seat, i want to say i've been in this Theatre for almost 10 years i know my right from my left, and i know which side of the row of seats start at 1 and which do not.... i can't tell you how many times i have had to correct seating mistakes it baffles the mind.

Oh, hey I'm sorry to hear all that. Artistically minded people are sometimes difficult to work with say the least. And if you were at odds with someone who injected himself into the production... eek. I know I had been almost (not quite!) but almost promised the role of "Annelle" in "Steel Magnolias" when the local theater did it. I know I could nail that. I mean, I basically am "Annelle" anyway. And if I want to I can really nail that kind of naïve, sweet, quiet ... bit. But no, auditions were held and I got something like "person standing in doorway". "Annelle" and all the big parts went to people who were "names" in the local town. (That's what they told me) Nice pic, btw. At first I thought it was someone from one of those popular boy bands :-)

All I can say is don't give up. You could be being too hard on yourself. Might be time to push this all back, and beside you and take the time to find Auditions you feel you are better suited for. If you feel you can act and sing, I am sure there are others out there who will agree.

I'm so sorry, Chris. I've heard similar stories from other people I know who have tried to break through in acting. My late husband's cousin lives in NYC and has done off-off-off-Broadway occasionally, and she goes to interviews and casting calls all the time. But there are jealousies and rumors about everyone and anyone from people trying to climb over other people to get jobs. I know that doesn't make it any better and shame on anyone who scratches and claws others to get parts. but I guess it's true that what doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

That is a fine picture of you. I hope you do go out and find a part and play you would like. I read lower down that it will not happen until you get your tooth fixed. Hope you do soon. It is expensive. I cannot wait to read Urinetown.

@chrissbergstrom Yes, I read your posts about Urinetown. That is how I got interested in it. You might even be able to do something yourself regarding your tooth.
