Hip Hip Hurray update!

Well I went for my 3 month post-op check up today and am doing really well. I have been cleared for all activities--and had been doing most everything I wanted at this point anyway. So I am glad. I had really thought going into this that I would be fine in a month--and in some ways I was. But a car ride of any length wiped me out--and regardless of what I thought, I wasn't just able to slip back into my full time schedule right away--it was more of an easing in-- But that awful grinding pain in my hip is gone and the rest of my body is adjusting--I can walk almost a mile now, although I haul along the crutch for some of the back half of that mile as I get tired-- Mostly, I am grateful--and lucky--and humble-- I am grateful that hip replacements are as good as they are, grateful that I have medical insurance at a time when so many do not. I am grateful for the excellent care that everyone has shown me--and I am so very lucky to have the love and support of friends and family around me. Finally, pain is humbling. It is an equalizer. I am not sure of all the lessons learned yet, but one by one, I am noting them as I recognize them--

Congrats on a successful surgery. I had a knee replaced 7 years ago and am looking to have the other done in the fall but no date and time yet, I use Walking Sticks instead of a cane. They are so much cooler.... You can get a pair at Walmart for around 15 to 20 dollars or you can go to a sports shop and spend $300 on a pair.

Walking sticks are great!! I am using a long stick that I think was actually a piece of driftwood--I have polished it with lots of use!

@divalounger That's cool too. My mother had Parkinson's and it never stopped her. I would find her in the woods with a "walking stick" she picked up in the woods years ago on any good day.

Thanks Dianne!! I will need the other one done in about a year or so--and then I intend to tromp around Europe for a while!

The recovery was remarkably easy and fairly pain free. I am working now on range of motion and strength before I do the other hip

That's great, Audrey. I'm guessing that you did all your exercises even the ones at home. I know people that do them do better and get around quicker than those that don't. With knee and hip replacements the medical providers recommend that we not get back to work prior to three months to give those joints more time to heal. A lot depend on what type of job people do have though. Since I cashier the doctor told me that I could experience more pain and swelling again once I'm standing more throughout the day while working. I'm not looking forward to that, but then again I mostly had discomfort after surgery and not actual pain that I know of, so maybe I wouldn't have the pain after I started working again either. I have some questions for you regarding what your hip was doing before your surgery, but I might look for a different post to ask them on to give you more pennies, lol.

Hi Marsha--I saw your post and comments-but will comment for you here as well--For a long time, it was the outside of my hip that caused me pain--my doc said it was bursitis, but I think it was more a function of bone spurs on the outside of the hip--those would pop sometimes with movement-- and it was uncomfortable, but not hugely painful--the real pain was inside the joint and that was a grinding pain that I had for a full year before surgery--and that made the discomfort on the outside of the hip seem like a cakewalk--have your doc look at it--they should be able to tell just from moving the hip around in the joint--

@divalounger Nice meeting you here. Glad to learn that you are up and moving again. Hip replacement sounds scary to me; but your optimism and faith is indeed inspiring. God Bless you with further improvement.

Thank you Gabby! Good to meet you as well! Any surgery is scary I think--and this was my first one--pain drove me to it--and I am so relieved not to be in pain any longer!! Happy Friday to you!
