Community Gardens

Something I have enjoyed for the past couple of years is this area's community garden plots.  Entirely free to use - the community garden offers people who don't have use of land - enough land to plant a plot.  Tilling and water provided by a volunteer.   He really put a lot of work into it, however that all came to a standstill. The community garden plot was on an empty habitat for humanity plot.  And this year we got notified that we can't use the space because someone will be building on it. I am wondering our status, the volunteer who has been heading this up told me that we have a new section of land to use for gardening, however I don't think he's been out there to prepare it at all yet and it's getting close to planting time...
The Mission of the American Community Gardening Association is to build community by increasing and enhancing community gardening and greening across the United States and Canada.

I'm sure if the area is chosen, he'll have it ready for you to plant when the time comes.

@FayeHazel I think that's common in a lot of people.

We have community gardens here too but I have an idea each person is responsible for their own plot. By this I mean there is no volunteers to help. But perhaps I have this wrong. I think community gardens are a great idea.

We have what we call an 'allotment' system, where people can rent enough a small plot to grow what they want. It's a pity that your community garden is being built on, I hope you get a replacement in time.

Thanks! Me too. I like that allotment system. At least it sounds like one would be reassured of having a space :-)

I know about urban gardening in big cities. The idea is good. Some German cities have beehives on the roofs of high-rise buildings which is also a good idea.

I have heard of rooftop garden in big cities. Hadn't heard of beehives before - I think both are fantastic.

Is he the same volunteer who did all the tilling and watering?

Yeah - he did the tilling before, and - as of last year he put underground soaker hoses. I felt bad for him. That must have been a lot of work.

It is bad to hear that you will have to start growing somewhere else soon. I hope all goes well for you. What do you usually plant

That is thoughtful of your government but at the same time just when you were in it that plot is taken away. Hope the new plot will stay with you for longer.

Thanks! I hope so too -- the new plot has been donated to us by a church, so hopefully we can keep using it for a long time

It's wonderful you have that option, we don't have that here @FayeHazel . I hope the new section of land will be a success.

It's a great option to have. I used to volunteer at the VA hospital in this area - huge campus. They had some raised beds for folks to use.

We have lots of little gardens dotted around. Some are looked after by the locals, but most are sorted out by the council

I think it's such a great idea. Is it flowers or vegetables? I've heard England is renown for roses....

I am intrigued by the very idea of community garden. How can you make people compromise to share plots, chores and produces? Here stolen produces is more common, whereas community garden sounds like a far-fetched idea.

D you ever have the problem of others reaping what they didn't sow?

Actually, wasn't too bad, though one of the neighbors kept threating to take some squash. Alas, some people are less than scrupulous.
