My Unofficial Word of the Day : Earworm

Maybe this word isn't new to you. But I never heard it before. Earworm. Definition? One of those songs that crawls into your ear, gets stuck in your head, and you can't get it out! Found a very subjective "Top Ten List" written by a fellow freelance writer in one of the online writing communities where I am sort of active. Sort of. Eh! I sign in every now and then to check to see if my articles are earning any money, make edits or changes to content for broken links, etc., may leave a few comments to encourage the other writers, and then I'm out of there! Great site for earning passive income. But sites like myLot earn and pay much quicker! So I have more incentive to be active here than there. Back on point. Of course, all Top Ten Lists are subjective. But this list upset me to begin with, because the first song on the list ... while I agree it is a "catchy loop" ... I could never bring myself to call it an earworm. That seems so ... so ... so disrespectful!! The ever popular Disney song is "It's a Small World". The Number 2 song on the list? Definitely an earworm. "Who Let the Dogs Out?" As with most Top Ten Lists, the commenters insisted on providing other suggestions that were NOT on the list. I refrained from "adding on". Because if I started thinking about songs that get stuck in my head, I'd be there for the rest of the day ... night ... month ... year ... century! I just wanted to share this new word that I learned today as my "unofficial" Word of the Day. Here are some words provided as the "official" Word of the Day by respected sites people likely use for research and reference purposes. English Words of the Day: ~ Lethargic (merriam-webster.com) ~ Coeur de Lion or lionhearted (dictionary.com) ~ Exacerbate (wordthink.com) ~ Redolent (learnersdictionary.com) Non-English Words of the Day: Spanish: perezoso (spanishdict.com) (ENG: lazy) French: assoiffé (101languages.net) (ENG: thirsty) Korean: gigye (koreanclass101.com) (ENG: machine) Hawaiian: Haku (hawaiinewsnow.com) (Showed up in “Top Stories” when I Googled “Word of the Day”.) Just a few words for fun. Feel free to add on.
They get stuck in your head. They'll rattle around in there for days. Yep, it's earworms, those catchy tunes we just can't seem to forget. Here's a list of ten earworms to drive you batty.

Earworm translated into German -- Ohrwurm. It has the same meaning. I've known it all my life.

I learned about the term reading This is Your Brain on Music, by Daniel Levitin. We've all had the experience!

So you've inserted "Who Let the Dogs Out" as my earworm for right now. An an antidote, I'm going to go listen to a song on YouTube that I'm trying to learn.

@TheHorse - I'm not from Texas. I'm from Florida. But I got to Texas as fast as I could. I've heard of this group but I've never heard any of their music. Thanks for sharing.

I have never used ear worm ever and do think I have heard it a few times. I usually just say the song is catchy and gets stuck in your head.

LSS. That's one I haven't heard either. As for the other site, I don't hold my breath waiting for the pay out.

Better an earworm than an earwig.

@cmoneyspinner An earwig is a nasty little critter that boroughs into the ear canal and it can be painful.

@JediYoda - Sorry about the typo. Edited my comment. It said "I lie". Meant to type "I like". My daughter borrows my laptop and she eats. Lately my keys on the keyboard have been sticking. To top it off my eyesight is not as good as it used to be. So I sometimes don't notice the missing letters and the misspelled words. I get so embarrassed when the person responds back nicely and politely in spite of what I typed up. Although sometimes when I re-read my typos they make me laugh.
